Kicking off with Iron Man in 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it would come to be known has gone from strength to strength as we've seen from the success of Guardians of the Galaxy this summer. Now, with a worldwide total of over $7 billion at the box office (it crossed that mark earlier this week), Marvel Studios movies are close to becoming the biggest franchise of all-time as they set their sights on the Harry Potter series (which has earned over $7.7 billion, but will add to that when Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is released in 2016). Before then of course, Avengers: Age of Ultron will open next year and as the first movie earned over $1.5 billion, it wouldn't be at all surprising if the sequel reaches upwards of $2 billion, giving it a good lead and potentially making it the first series to ever pass $8 billion. James Bond is the third biggest franchise with $6.2 billion, but it looks as if the future of global dominance at the box office lies squarely with the Disney owned Marvel Studios.
