"I think the history I know is a little different."
―Logan[src]

James "Logan" Howlett, (born 1832) also known as Wolverine, is a Canadian class 3 mutant and a principal member of the X-Men. His mutation granted him a number of animalistic attributes including three retractable razor sharp claws on each hand, and heightened senses, which allowed him to track people through scent and sound. He also has superhuman strength, reflexes, stamina and highly developed accelerated healing abilities, allowing him to heal injuries almost instantly, while also rendering him agelessly immortal.

Logan was captured by William Stryker and unwillingly had the adamantium bonded to his entire skeleton, as well as having his memories erased at Stryker's behest, so that he could be used as a weapon. Logan was freed from Stryker's control by Jean Grey, who was able to partially restored his memories, via her telepathy.

By the year 2023, Logan had become acquainted with Charles Xavier and joined the X-Men in the process. The circumstances of him meeting Charles and becoming a member of the X-Men are unknown, due to his future-self's mind being sent into his body by Kitty Pryde to prevent the events that led up to the Sentinel Wars from ever happening.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Logan shared the history of his counterpart, until 1973 when his future-self transported his mind into his younger-self's body.

X-Men: Days of Future Past[]

Logan woke up in New York City, 1973 sleeping with the woman that is he was suppose to be protecting for a mob boss. Gangsters came in and attacked him and he, in turn, killed them and stole their car. He drove to the abandoned X-Mansion and forced his way in, but is attacked by Beast, who is ordered by Charles to stop. Logan then explained to them what happens in the future and convinced Xavier to help.

They find Quicksilver, a man Wolverine knew in the future, and convinced him to help. While they were breaking Magneto out of the Pentagon, Xavier tried to convince the guards to let them through but Logan knocked them unconscious instead. Guards surrounded them so Wolverine extends his bone claws but before he could use them, Quicksilver knocked all of the guards down.

They left Quicksilver and traveled to Paris where Mystique was heading. Charles stopped her from killing Trask, but then Wolverine stared at a young Stryker and began to snap out of the time travel as he remembered what Stryker did to him. Logan looked around wondering where he was before his future self retook control. They returned to New York and he convinced the Professor to stop taking the serum and use his powers to find Mystique. At first it failed but Wolverine let Xavier use his mind to talk to his future self to give him hope. They found out that Mystique was going to Washington, D.C. where the President would unveil the Sentinel Program.

They traveled to Washington and watched the presentation of what would eventually destroy them. Xavier found Mystique and sent Logan and Hank to get her but Erik used the Sentinels to attack and placed a football stadium around the White House. Logan and Beast fought off the Sentinels but Magneto punctured metal through Wolverine and sent him flying into a river where he drowned. This sent his consciousness back into the new, brighter future.

The police found Logan in the river and brought him up, giving him to Mystique who was disguised as Stryker.

X-Men: Apocalypse[]

"Hope that's the last we've seen of that guy."
Cyclops[src]

Under unknown circumstances, the real William Stryker still found and obtained Logan from Mystique, granted it's unknown if Mystique willingly turned him over or if she left him behind to Weapon X's mercy. Cruelly, he once again underwent the adamantium bonding process, but unlike before, his memories were successfully wiped at Stryker's behest, leaving him in a feral and aggressive mindset. It's also known that Zander Rice's father, a scientist stationed at Alkali Lake's Weapon X facility, was the primary operator of Logan's procedure.

In 1983, Major Stryker captured Beast, Peter, Raven, and Moira after Alex Summers apparently died in an explosion he accidentally caused trying to stop En Sabah Nur from capturing Charles Xavier. From the rubble of Xavier's mansion, destroyed from the explosion, they had been captured. They were held in Stryker's military facility for interrogation. Scott, Jean and Kurt followed Stryker covertly to free their friends. It was at the facility that Jean discovered Logan in a containment as Stryker's brainwashed experiment, dubbed Weapon X. Jean used her powers to free Weapon X, who then killed all of Stryker's soldiers. After Scott, Jean, and Kurt freed everyone, they left the facility. Finding Logan attempting to escape, Jean rather kindly offered to help him and telekinetically partially restored his memories. Calmly removing his monitoring equipment, Logan fled into the snowy forests, to which Scott snidely remarked he hoped that they wouldn't see him again.

X-Men: Days of Future Past[]

"Its good to see you all."
―Logan[src]

Logan woke up at the X-Mansion and walked around to see the X-Men all alive. Xavier then told him about what happened in the last fifty years. Logan was the only person to retain his memories from the original timeline.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Mutant Physiology: Wolverine is a very powerful mutant who possesses superhuman strength, durability, endurance, speed, agility, reflexes, flexibility, dexterity, stamina, senses, an accelerated healing factor, immunity, retractable razor-sharp claws, empathy, etc.
    • Superhuman Strength: Wolverine is much stronger than a normal human. He can easily bench press 5 tons. Most prominently, he is able to not only support the weight of his adamantium skeleton, but also quickly overpower, rag doll and launch most humans several feet through the air. During his escape from the Weapon X facility, as shown in X-Men: Apocalypse, Wolverine was shown to be able to leap several feet into the air, as if his strength extended to his legs.
    • Superhuman Durability: Wolverine is far more durable than a normal human. His durability is further enhanced after his bones are infused with adamantium to the point that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible to kill or injure Wolverine. He has been repeatedly shot, stabbed, and has endured extreme forms of energy without passing out and barely being slowed down. In some instances, bullets have ricocheted off of his adamantium skeleton, barely piercing the skin.
    • Superhuman Endurance: Wolverine's endurance, tenacity, vitality, willpower and pain tolerance are limitless. This allows him to continue fighting without being weakened, stunned, dazed or fatigued, as well as making it difficult for pain to cripple him, or sometimes faze him at all.
    • Superhuman Speed: Wolverine is able to easily run over 60 mph.
    • Superhuman Agility: Wolverine's agility is far greater than an Olympic-level human, he is able to leap across greater distances and can even perform flips in mid-air.
    • Superhuman Reflexes: Wolverine has lightning-fast auto-reflexes far greater than an Olympic-level human.
    • Superhuman Flexibility: Wolverine's flexibility is far greater than an Olympic-level human.
    • Superhuman Dexterity: Wolverine's dexterity is far greater than an Olympic-level human.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Wolverine can engage in physical activity for far longer than an Olympic-level human.
    • Superhuman Senses: Wolverine's senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste and instincts are heightened far beyond that of a human's. He can see much further and closer than normal humans with perfect clarity, even retaining this perfect clarity in total darkness. His enhanced hearing allows him to detect sounds that normal humans can't, and hear sounds at much greater distance. His sense of smell is sufficiently heightened and is capable of tracking people through scent alone. He's able to sense danger, detect lies and weaknesses.
      • Temporal Awareness: Due to the fact that Wolverine's mind was sent back into his younger body through time by Kitty Pryde, when he returned to the year 2023, after preventing the Sentinel Wars from ever happening; Wolverine still maintained his memories from the original timeline.
    • Accelerated Perception: Wolverine mind and instincts process the world in the most advanced and efficient manner possible. His aggressive behavior is also in part affected by his animal-like instincts.
    • Accelerated Healing Factor: Wolverine's instant regenerative abilities allow him to rapidly regenerate any damaged or destroyed bodily molecules, cells, tissues, bones, limbs, organs, etc instantaneously. Wolverine's healing factor allows him to completely and rapidly heal and recover from any injury within a matter of seconds. Wolverine's healing factor and Adamantium skeleton make him immortal and virtually indestructible.
    • Superhuman Immunity: Due to Wolverine's accelerated healing factor, he is immune to all poisons, toxins, impurities, illnesses, diseases, radiation, infections, disorders, imperfections, and other harmful foreign substances.
    • Immortality: Due to Wolverine's accelerated healing factor; he is more or less immortal, unable to rot, get sick, and incapable of being permanently wounded, making him self-sustained.
    • Adaptation: Wolverine has super advanced surviving ability, that automatically adapts and modifies his mind and body allowing him to survive in any different environments, conditions, situations, enemies, etc normally deadly.
  • Adamantium Skeleton: Wolverine's adamantium skeletal system makes his musculoskeletal indestructible. It is the adamantium that has enhanced his strength and durability further, to the point where he could easily overpower, rag doll and launch humans easier and with less effort that he would need to exert. It makes it difficult to stun or daze him, though being hit in the head with enough force can be enough to knock him unconscious.
    • Retractable Bone Claws: Wolverine possesses three retractable razor-sharp adamantium claws in each of his hands. Due to the Adamantium infusion with his skeleton, Wolverine's claws are capable of cutting through almost any substance known to man.

Abilities[]

  • Excellent Hand-To-Hand Combatant: Wolverine is an excellent hand-to-hand combatant with experience fighting against various cage-fighters and being in the U.S. military for over 120 years and surviving at least four different wars.
  • Expert Marksman: Wolverine is an expert marksman skilled in throwing weapons and firearms, but operates more efficiently without them.

Weaknesses[]

  • Adamantium: Wolverine's adamantium claws cannot penetrate or destroy objects/weapons that are composed of adamantium; unless they are super-heated.
  • Water: Due to Wolverine's bones being infused with adamantium; it is difficult for him to swim in water, as effectively as he could before. However, his superhuman strength and stamina allow him to compensate for the additional weight.
  • Magnetism: Due to Wolverine's bones being infused with adamantium, Wolverine is vulnerable to being subdued or manipulated by enemies using magnetic powers.

Relationships[]

Appearances/Actors[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Hugh Jackman was uncredited in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Apocalypse.
  • Wolverine was originally intended to have a larger part in X-Men Apocalypse, with writer Simon Kinberg implying Charles and Hank eventually located him (presumably with the use of Cerebro) following the events of Days of Future Past. Elaborating, he stated: "There was always a notion that we wanted Wolverine to be in the movie. We wanted to find a way to feature him in the film, partly because Bryan (Singer) and I love Hugh (Jackman) so much. We love the character, obviously, and he’s such a huge part of the franchise. There were a lot of iterations of how Wolverine would enter and exit the movie. There was a version when he was going to come in at the midpoint of the film and be like the drill sergeant for the kids and take over as their leader, and we felt like that stepped on (Jennifer Lawrence’s) role in the movie and becoming their leader".[1]

Trivia[]

  • In the films, Wolverine's accelerated healing powers are never referred to as a "mutant healing factor".
  • In the comics, Wolverine is quite short, standing at 5'3. Hugh Jackman is 6'2.
  • Despite having been a soldier along with Sabertooth during the 1900's, as portrayed in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Logan is a civilian during the events of X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past, during which the Vietnam War had been going on.
  • Hugh Jackman is in the 2017 Guinness Book of World Records for playing the longest Marvel superhero in live action.
  • In the comics, Logan saved the lives of Peter Parker's parents. After, the two free him when he was held by HYDRA.
