"I'm a fighter. I'll be one for as long as I can."
―Emil Blonsky[src]

Emil Blonsky was a captain in the British Royal Marines. After being loaned to SOCOM at the request of Joe Greller, Blonsky was injected with the Super Soldier Serum and a synthetic version of Bruce Banner's gamma radiation blood, which transformed him into the Abomination.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Emil was born in Russia and raised in England, where he eventually joined the Royal Marines and was promoted to the rank of captain. Despite receiving an incredible track record, Emil refused to be promoted to colonel, claiming that he wanted to be a fighter for as long as he could.

The Incredible Hulk[]

After General Ross discovered Banner's location, Joe Greller put together a team to capture him, led by Emil. Following a ferocious battle in the soft drink bottling plant where Banner transforms into the Hulk, escapes Emil, and ends up in Guatemala.

Emil reports to Ross that Banner evaded them in Brazil because of the appearance of a large green monster. Ross explains that the monster is Banner, and that he was created accidentally during an experiment in radiation-resistance that was inspired by World War II era military bio-force enhancement research (or "Super-Soldiers", as Emil puts it).

Emil, seeking both revenge and power, volunteers as a test subject in order to capture Banner. He receives a small dose of a mothballed reproduction of the original Vita Ray serum, created by Dr. Reinstein for Weapon Plus. He leads an assault on Banner at Culver University, during which Betty is knocked unconscious. Despite Emil's amplified strength, speed and agility, the Hulk crushes most of the bones in Emil's body.

Emil, whose super-soldier treatment has healed all his injuries, reawakens ready to fight the Hulk again. The general gives him a larger dose of the Super Soldier serum but it's clear that while the reproduced serum is effective, it was not a perfect copy of the original Super Soldier serum as there were side effects such a physical deformities(his muscle structure started to change and his spinal column was contorting) and increases aggression which seemed to inhibit rational thinking. Desperate for more power, demands Samuel Sterns subject him to a dose of Banner's gamma radiation treatment. Sterns warns that the combination of the Super Soldier formula and a gamma treatment would be an unpredictable combination that could turn him into an "abomination". Blonsky is less than concerned about this, and Sterns promptly administers the gamma charge. As Blonsky mutates into a monstrous creature, he knocks Sterns aside and an irradiated sample of Banner's blood-derivative drips into an open wound on Sterns's temple.

In an attempt to draw the Hulk out, the Abomination goes on a rampage through New York. Hulk jumps out of Ross' helicopter and after a brutal battle the Hulk manages to defeat the Abomination by strangling him with a huge chain, though he releases his grip after a plea from Betty. The Abomination collapses, and the Hulk flees the scene with the army in hot pursuit.

The Consultant[]

The Government decides to free Emil after he's taken captive by General Ross, since he's a famous war hero and he's believed to have wrought havoc because he was trying to defend himself from the attack of the Hulk. Thanks to the combined effort of Phil Coulson, Jasper Sitwell and Tony Stark, The Abomination remains in captivity.

The Avengers[]

Banner indirectly refers to Emil when he tells Tony Stark that the last time he was in New York, he did significant damage to Harlem.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.[]

"T.R.A.C.K.S."[]

"If you endanger an operation, or if anyone gets hurt, I'll reassign you to Barrow, Alaska, and you'll spend the rest of your years pulling the night shift guarding Blonsky's cryo-cell."
Phil Coulson[src]

It was mentioned that Emil is incarcerated in a cryo-cell in Barrow, Alaska. There is a guard night shift assigned to the cell.

Character traits[]

In The Incredible Hulk, as a veteran soldier, Emil has a deep passion for combat, which is the main reason why he had always refused being promoted from the rank of captain over the years.

After his first encounter with Hulk, Emil became so obsessed with defeating the green superhuman, to the point that he slowly lost his sanity and emotions in the process, proving that he was nothing but a selfish-glory seeker.

When Emil discovered that Samuel Sterns had Bruce Banner's gamma radiation blood samples, he forced Sterns into injecting him with the blood samples, but also ignored the warnings that there could be unforeseen consequences, which proved how obsessed Emil had become in his goal to surpass the Hulk in terms of physical prowess.

After he transformed into the Abomination, Emil accepted his new form and immediately became corrupted by his new found powers, becoming far more arrogant, cruel, sadistic, aggressive, violent, ruthless, unstable and obsessive. He went on a rampage through Harlem, and killed several civilians and soldiers simply to show off his new found powers, proving that he had no regard for innocent lives.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Superhuman Physiology: After being injected with an imperfect version of the Super Soldier Serum and a synthetic version of Hulk's gamma radiation blood, Blonsky gained a number of superhuman attributes, including superhuman strength, durability, speed, agility, reflexes, jumping, leaping, stamina and an accelerated healing factor.
    • Superhuman Strength: Abomination is much stronger than normal humans. He was capable of lifting Samuel Sterns clear off the ground with one arm and holding him high in the air at his arm's full extent while showing little to no physical effort in doing this. He was even capable of sending Betty flying across the room by a slight push of his hand. As Abomination, he can lift objects that weigh over 100 tons with little to no effort at all.
    • Superhuman Durability: Abomination is far more durable than normal humans. He was able to withstand high-caliber bullets and even physical blows from Hulk.
    • Superhuman Speed: Abomination is much faster than normal humans. While being chased by Hulk, who possesses superhuman speed himself, Abomination could still outrun him.
    • Superhuman Agility: Abomination is far more agile than normal humans. He was capable of leaping on to Hulk's head.
    • Superhuman Reflexes: Abomination's reflexes are much faster than normal humans. He was able to catch a RPG shell fired at him in midair relatively easily.
    • Superhuman Jumping/Leaping: Abomination can jump much higher, and leap much farther than normal humans.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Abomination possesses far more stamina then normal humans, allowing him to remain physically active for long periods of time.
    • Accelerated Healing Factor: Abomination's metabolism allows him to heal much faster, more extensively, and efficiently than normal humans. All of Abomination's bones were badly broken during his second battle with Hulk and yet he was capable of fully healing in less than a day, such a feat of accelerated healing cannot be accomplished by Captain America's "healing factor" in the amount of time it took Abomination to do so. This indicates that Abomination's "healing factor" was abnormally faster than any Super Soldier's healing factor.
    • Retractable Skeletal Spikes: Abomination possesses razor-sharp spikes on his arms, elbows and feet. These were emerged through Blonsky's transformation and a reaction when Abomination was in battle with Hulk. These were used in battle with Hulk, as weapons, when a sharp spike on his elbow causes a deep wound on Hulk's chest.

Abilities[]

  • Expert Hand-To-Hand Combatant: As a veteran soldier, Blonsky is a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant.
  • Master Marksman: As a veteran soldier, Blonsky is a highly skilled marksman.
  • Advanced Military Operative: Blonsky was a veteran soldier, capable commanding teams for various sorts of missions.
  • Expert Acrobat: Because of the dose of serum, Blonsky was able to avoid obstacles, committed by Hulk during the second attempt to capture him, through various maneuvers of acrobatics.

Weaknesses[]

  • Limited Strength: Although Abomination is incredibly strong, he does have his limits. He is unable to match Hulk in terms of physical strength, when he gives completely into his rage, which further greatly amplified Hulk's superhuman strength.

Relationships[]

Appearances/Actors[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Tim Roth said he accepted the role because of his sons, who are fans of the Hulk comic book.
  • It was Tim Roth who proposed that Louis Leterrier made Blonsky a UK Army soldier instead of a KGB agent.
  • Roth enjoyed the motion capture, which reminded him of fringe theater, and he hired his trainer from Planet of the Apes to aid him in portraying the monster's movement.

Trivia[]

  • Originally, in the comics Emil Blonsky is a Russian spy and when he became the Abomination he had reptilian skin. In the movie he's a Russian-born, British Royal Marines-trained officer on loan to the US Armed Forces who is working with General Ross. In the MCU, when he becomes the Abomination, he doesn't have reptilian skin, but rather sickly green skin, a disfigured spine and piercing horns of bones capable of piercing the Hulk's bulletproof skin. After being injected with the Hulk's blood, He grew into a pale green monster larger than the Hulk with bony protrusions coming from his spine and joints. He had all of the Hulk's abilities (stamina, strength, durability, etc.) but to a greater degree because he was enhanced before his change. While still intelligent, his transformation seems to have eroded his rational thinking, making Blonsky what the Hulk would be with no morality.
  • Prior to being cast in Punisher: War Zone, Ray Stevenson was in discussions for the role.
  • In the comics, the Abomination usually has a pair of fish-like pointy ears, but they were abandoned for the movie. The director, Louis Leterrier, tried to work in the character's pointed ears, and the Hulk would just bite them off, but he felt that it would make the Hulk come across as stupid.
  • There are also several other differences between the Abomination in the comics and film. In the comics, he is usually bright green, and very reptillian-looking. But in the film, he is a muddled light green with some brown and as well as having many bone protrusions, including his spine, which is fully emerged from his back. Leterrier changed the Abomination's design from the comics because he felt the audience would question why he resembled a fish or a reptile, instead of "an uber-human" like the Hulk.
  • Abomination was to be in the sequel to Ang Lee's film, but would have been Glenn Talbot instead of Emil Blonsky.
  • In one of several novelizations, it's revealed S.H.I.E.L.D. took custody of Abomination.
  • Following the transformation, and while barely noticeable, the Abomination retains Blonsky's tattoo on his upper right arm.
  • Abomination is one of the few main antagonists not to be killed off in their debut appearance. Other antagonists were Loki Laufeyson, The Other, and Thanos.
  • He is never actually referred to as The Abomination throughout the film, as Leterrier thought the alias sounded silly. It is alluded to, however, when Samuel Sterns tells Blonsky that injecting himself with Banner's blood combined with the super soldier serum already in his body, could result in "an abomination". He is later referred to as The Abomination in "Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant".
  • Actor Tim Roth supplied motion capture and voice effects for the Abomination, which was digitally enhanced.
