"Jane, none of us know how long we have. We don't know what tomorrow holds. And Mjölnir... Mjølnir chose you. And it chose you because you're worthy. And that's something. When I first met you, I was unworthy. I was unable to pick up that hammer. But you taught me there is no greater purpose than to help those in need. You made me worthy. So whatever you wanna do, we can do together."
―Thor[src]

Thor Odinson is the Asgardian God of Thunder, superhero, self-proclaimed protector of Earth and the king of Asgard. Thor made a name for himself as the mightiest warrior on his homeworld and subsequently became well known for his actions on Earth, which included acting as a founding member of the Avengers. He is the son of Odin Borson and Frigga, and the adoptive brother of Loki Laufeyson.

Thor wielded the mystical war hammer, Mjölnir, which channeled his God of Thunder powers; until it was destroyed by his sister, Hela Odinsdottir. In an attempt to flee his sister, Thor found himself stranded on Sakaar where he was forced to be a champion in the Grandmaster's games. After escaping Sakaar, he brought about Ragnarök with the help of the Revengers and destroyed his home and Hela with it. He lead the Asgardian refugees away from the destruction in hunt for a new home.

Thanos intercepted their vessel and killed a large amount of the refugees along with Loki, Thor survived the carnage and was found drifting in space by the Guardians of the Galaxy. Bent on getting revenge on Thanos, Thor went with Rocket and Groot to Nidavellir so that Eitri could forge him a weapon powerful enough to kill Thanos and then returned to Earth to join the battle. Thanos was successful in his mission and decimated half of existence.

Thor was devastated and enraged by what Thanos had done and, upon finding out that the Mad Titan had destroyed the Infinity Stones, decapitated him as he no longer had any use. Over the next five years, Thor sunk into a depression, he settled the surviving refugees in New Asgard and ruled as their king but became a recluse, overweight drunk who the Asgardians barely saw.

Biography

Early life

Thor had an idyllic childhood, brought up in Asgard, a futuristic Viking kingdom, as the treasured son of Odin and his wife Frigga. His best friend and playmate was his adopted brother Loki and though they were rivals for their father's throne, they still remained close companions.

Brought up in the warrior culture of the Asgardians, Thor valued strength, courage and loyalty above all else. He desired to be exactly like his father the war hero, and often remarked on the monsters he will slay and the wars he will win when he is king. Thor would be worshiped as a deity of strength and courage among Scandinavian cultures.

He proved himself a great warrior, often leading his band of warriors (which included Loki, the Lady Sif, and the Warriors Three) on adventures. However, he was also known to be reckless. This became evident when Loki jokingly reminded him that he would be dead had he not used a smoke veil to ease their escape during one battle.

Although Odin chose him as his heir, he openly remarked that he thought Thor was a "vain, greedy, cruel boy" after Thor started an ill-advised war against the Frost Giants.

The Avengers Initiative

Thor tried to save a group of Dwarves and has to fight Imir to do so. He triumphed over Imir and set the Dwarves free.

"Your ancestors called it magic, but you call it science. I come from a land where they are one and the same."
―Thor[src]

A ceremony was held in Asgard to allow Thor to ascend to the Throne of Asgard, as Odin was about to finally enter the Odinsleep after putting it off for so long. Thor revelled in the ceremony and underwent the passage of becoming King from Odin. As Odin was about to name Thor king, he sensed that Frost Giants have sneaked into Asgard and into Odin's Vault to steal the Casket of Ancient Winters. Unbeknownst to everyone, Loki had let the Jotuns in, to interrupt the coronation purposely. Odin, Thor and Loki went to the vault to find that the three Frost Giants have killed two Einherjar, before being slain by the Destroyer. Thor insisted that Asgard must send an army to Jotunheim as Odin did before him, though he was forbidden to do so. Later, Thor gathered his friends Sif and the Warriors Three and disobeyed Odin's orders to force answers out of Laufey, king of Jotunheim.

Convincing Heimdall, the warrior who guards the Bifrost, Thor and his allies visited Jotunheim to interrogate Laufey without success. Thor's pride forced him to begin a battle with the Jotuns which left many of them dead or vengeful. Odin arrived just in time to save Thor and the others before they were outnumbered. Thor's actions led Laufey to threaten Asgard with a new war. As punishment for his actions Thor was stripped of his mighty hammer Mjölnir and his godlike strength and banished to Earth where he was forced to live as a mortal. Thor landed in New Mexico and was hit by a truck driven by researchers Jane Foster, Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis. Thor was tasered by Darcy when she felt "freaked out" by his behavior.

Thor awoke in a hospital bed where he thought he was being held captive. He eventually escaped and met Jane Foster again, who wanted to speak to him about how he ended up in the storm which brought him to Earth. Thor was instantly attracted to Jane and overheard a conversation between two men who claimed to have been trying to remove a satellite from a crater in the desert. He realized this was in fact Mjölnir. Thor was accused by Selvig of being insane due to his claims to be the Son of Odin and was compelled to leave them. However, fate allowed him to bump into Jane again, who drove him to the crater where the intelligence agency S.H.I.E.L.D. were investigating the hammer. Thor used his Asgardian warrior skills to fight past dozens of agents until he reached Mjölnir, but found that he couldn't lift the hammer because it had deemed him unworthy. Thor was imprisoned by Phil Coulson and spoke with a vision of Loki, who deceived Thor by telling him that Odin was dead and Thor's banishment had been upgraded to a permanent exile, which was conditional for the truce with Jotunheim. Thor entered a state of depression until he was freed by Erik Selvig, who told the agents that Thor was a former physician named Donald Blake. Selvig told Thor that he feared for Jane, should Thor continue seeking a relationship with her. Reluctantly, Thor agreed that he would leave town, the following day. After a night of drunken revelry with Selvig, Thor returned to Jane and gave her a fraction of her research which S.H.I.E.L.D. had stolen. He then explained to her about his godhood, Asgard and the Nine Realms and, for the first time, felt comfortable as a mortal man.

The next day, Thor's friends, the Warriors Three and Sif, arrived on Earth to bring him home, explaining that Odin was alive and Loki has claimed leadership over Asgard. Loki sent the Destroyer after Thor, leveling the small town. When the Asgardians failed to defeat the Destroyer, Thor offered his life to the automaton to save the Earth. A blow from the Destroyer killed Thor's mortal form, restoring his worthiness to wield Mjölnir and reclaim his powers. Thor defeated the Destroyer and promised Phil Coulson an alliance. Thor set out to return to Asgard, promising Jane that he would return for her and giving her a passionate kiss before leaving. Thor revealed Loki's plot to their mother Frigga and battled Loki on the Bifrost, which was slowly destroying Jotunheim with its power. Thor chose to save the Jotuns by shattering the rainbow bridge and thus destroying the Bifrost. Odin arrived just in time to save Loki and Thor from falling into space. Loki, knowing his actions have not earned him the respect he wanted, allowed himself to fall into the abyss while Thor cried out for his brother.

Thor mourned Loki's apparent death and longed to see Jane again, knowing he cannot as long as the Bifrost was gone. He made amends with his father then spoke with Heimdall about the likelihood of returning to Earth, to which Heimdall only offered hope.

Black Widow Strikes

Thor was on S.H.I.E.L.D. screens as a possible candidate for the Avengers Initiative.

Thor: The Dark World Prelude #1

Heimdall noted that the destruction of the Bifrost "continues to shift the balance of power across the nine realms...and into the worlds beyond Yggdrasil."

Thor realized that by saving Jotunheim, he had weakened the other realms. Odin indicated that this has brought the universe closer to Ragnarok. As Odin left to meet with Tyr, Heimdall asked Thor if he wanted to know what was happening with Jane on Earth, Thor stated that he would like to know but not at that moment.

One year later, Thor's mother discovered that Loki was alive and seeking the Tesseract. Heimdall confirmed Loki being alive and informed Thor that the search for the Tesseract had led to Earth. Thor decided to stop Loki but couldn't because the Bifrost was destroyed. However, Odin knew another way. Odin used dark energy to send Thor to Earth, landing in a forest.

The Avengers

"You have no idea what you are dealing with!"
―Thor[src]

When Asgard discovered Loki was upon Earth, wielding the Chitauri Scepter and seeking the Tesseract, Odin used dark sorcery to send Thor to Earth to stop him. Thor landed on the jet in which Loki was being escorted back to the Helicarrier by Captain America, Iron Man and Black Widow, and took Loki from their custody. Thor tried to convince Loki to give up his plans and return home to Asgard with the Tesseract, though Loki was under duress by Thanos, to succeed with an invasion of Earth. In spite of Thor's insistence on their brotherhood, Loki still resented him. Iron Man attacked Thor and the two trade blows when Iron Man refused to allow Thor to take Loki away. When Captain America intervened, he pointed out that they shouldn't be fighting each other, and asked Thor to put Mjölnir down. In response, Thor brought his hammer down on Captain America, who blocked it with his shield. The shield absorbed the impact, shocking Thor, who realized they have the same goal and stopped fighting.

They return to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, where Loki was put into a cell designed to hold the Hulk and dispose of him if necessary. Thor was quick to point out that while Loki was unstable he was still his adoptive brother. Later, he asked Coulson about Jane Foster and was told that she was moved to a secure location when Loki returned and Erik Selvig was put under his control. Thor was asked by Fury if he was capable of inflicting torture on Loki to reveal his goals. Later as Thor and the others argue, Loki's mind controlled henchmen blew up one of the Helicarrier's engines and helped to free Loki, also triggering Banner to unwillingly transform into the Hulk. Thor fought the Hulk, being the only one who can match him in strength. After the Hulk had been led off of the Helicarrier, Thor went to make sure Loki was still contained. When he arrived the cell door was open, and Thor tried to stop Loki leaving. It was an illusion and Thor got trapped in the cell. Loki threatened to drop the cage when Coulson confronted him with a gun made from the Destroyer. Loki impaled Coulson in the back and proceeded to drop Thor. As he plummeted towards Earth, Thor managed to smash free from the cell just in time to avoid the impact.

After recovering from the fall, Thor used Mjölnir's powers to replenish his strength before he headed to New York City to confront Loki. Arriving at Stark Tower, Loki had used the Tesseract to open a portal allowing the Chitauri to invade Earth. Thor again tried to convince him to stop, since the Chitauri were destroying the world he wanted to rule. Failing, he briefly clashed with his brother before Loki fled on a Chitauri vessel. Thor joined Captain America, Black Widow and Hawkeye on the battlefield, and started to fight the Chitauri, before Iron Man and Hulk join them. Captain America ordered Thor to use his power to stem the flow of enemies coming through the portal, which he did using lightning bolts. He then joined the battle once more and helped Hulk bring down a Leviathan. Soon Iron Man sent a nuclear missile intended for the city through the portal. This destroyed the Chitauri base, causing the forces to be cut off from their power source and die, while Black Widow closed the portal.

Once the crisis was over, Thor joined the other Avengers in confronting Loki, who had already been beaten into submission by the Hulk and took him into custody. After claiming the Tesseract, Thor took Loki back to Asgard, by opening a portal with it and left the other Avengers in Central Park.

Iron Man 3 Prelude

After Loki was defeated, James Rhodes arrived in New York to help out Tony. Rhodes located Stark in a Shawarma restaurant where he was introduced to Thor and the other Avengers.

Thor: The Dark World Prelude #2

After joining the Avengers to counter the extraterrestrial invasion of New York, Thor returned Loki and the Tesseract to Asgard, leaving Loki to face justice and using the Tesseract to rebuild the Bifrost. He then rallies his fellow Asgardians, including Sif, the Warriors Three and the Einherjar, to help him protect the Nine Realms and join him in battle against the Marauders, who are attacking Vanaheim.

Iron Man 3

Tony Stark stated to his girlfriend Pepper Potts that the events of the Battle of New York changed his experiences, saying that "gods, aliens [and] other dimensions" were beyond his understanding, clearly referencing Thor and Loki. While Stark was being held in captivity, Aldrich Killian mentioned Thor, stating that ever since he appeared on Earth, "subtlety had its day".

Thor: The Dark World

"I gave you my word, I would return."
―Thor to Jane Foster[src]

Thor saved Sif and his friends in a battle in Vanaheim, before destroying a Kronan with a single blow of Mjölnir and scaring the rest of the Marauders into submission. After the battle, Thor told Hogun that he should stay with his people because Asgard could wait. Hours later, when Odin was watching the Asgardian soldiers train with Sif, Thor came to speak with him. Odin insisted he had now earned the throne and should take it, but Thor declined. At the celebration, Thor was lonely seeing everybody else enjoying themselves while he missed Jane Foster. Thor left the celebrations to see Heimdall and check on Jane. When Thor talked with Heimdall about the Convergance, Heimdall then checks on Jane, but cannot see her (as she has been momentarily sucked into a portal and so becomes host to the Aether). Afraid that she might be in danger, Thor goes to earth.

Thor arrived on Earth where he found Jane, Darcy Lewis and Ian Boothby. Jane walked over to him and slapped him twice, the first to check if he was real, the second because Thor didn't visit her when he came to Earth to stop Loki using the Tesseract. Thor told her that he didn't have time to visit her because of the war of the realms. As Jane was about to be arrested the Aether repelled the policeman. Worried about her, Thor took her to Asgard to be examined by Eir.

Odin walked in as Jane was being looked over and was angry that Thor was so uncouth as to bring a mortal to Asgard. He demanded that Jane should be sent back to Earth, but when Einhejar tried to seize her, the Aether repelled them. Odin recognized the power and explained the story of the Dark Elves to Jane and Thor, now agreeing that Jane should stay in Asgard.

The next morning, Thor and Jane woke up and Jane was amazed by the view of Asgard. Later they went for a walk and Thor explained the story of the Convergence. As he explained, Kurse broke the the prisoners out of the dungeon, so Thor went to stop the destruction. Thor returned to check on his mother and Jane, only to see Malekith kill Frigga. He shouted in grief, and furiously attacked Malekith, but the Dark Elf escaped with the help of Kurse but not before Thor scarred the right side of his face with a thunderbolt from his hammer. Thor attended his mother's funeral that night. Loki was kept in the dungeons, unable to attend.

Thor tried to talk to Odin and persuade him of an alternative to staying and waiting for the Elves to come back, but Odin refused. Heimdall, Volstagg, Fandral and Sif agreed to help Thor break Jane and Loki out of Asgard, in an effort to save the Nine Realms from Malekith. Thor visited Loki, who was hell bent on vengeance for his 'mother'. Thor devised a plan to defeat Malekith: he would follow Malekith to Svartalfheim, force him to separate the Aether from Jane, and then destroy it himself.

After a daring escape, Thor and Loki reached Svartalfheim in a commandeered stealth ship left behind by the elves, while Jane, who was also with them, slipped into unconsciousness. When the pair reached Malekith, Loki tricked the elves into believing that he had severed Thor's hand and then turned Jane over to them. Malekith proceeded to extract the Aether from her, but when the brothers dropped their ruse so that Thor could destroy it, Malekith absorbed it into himself instead. During the ensuing battle, the brothers fought Algrim/Kurse together, but Loki was dealt a grievous blow in the process of delivering his final attack. Thor went to his dying brother's side, after the fight, and promised to tell Odin that Loki had died a hero.

Thor and Jane chased Malekith back to Earth, where they combined efforts with Dr. Selvig and the interns to stop the dark elf from plunging all of the realms back into darkness. Although the fight was a long and difficult one, Jane's expertise eventually saw Malekith shunted out of Earth's dimension and back to Svartalfheim where he was crushed by his own ship. Duty-bound as Asgard's protector, and needing to face up to his treasonous actions, Thor was forced to leave his love and return to Asgard again. But instead of returning to another stern dressing down, he found that his actions had earned him a pardon and also a further gift. He requested that he be allowed to return to Jane. In light of the boldness of the request, he also offered to hand over Mjolnir, but Odin quietly refused it before letting him go. Unknown to Thor, Loki is disguised as Odin. Thor then returns to Earth and reunites with Jane.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

"You've meddled with something you don't understand."
―Thor[src]

Thor, along with the other Avengers, retrieved Loki's Scepter in Sokovia while fighting a HYDRA base ran by Wolfgang von Strucker who was using the scepter to experiment on people.

The team returned to the Avengers headquarters, where Thor was asked to give a report on the Hulk, however, his initial report stressed Banner even more and immediately corrected himself. After arriving at HQ, he agreed with Tony's request to stay for a bit while he researched the scepter. This allows Thor to attend a victory party. After the party he challenged the Avengers to lift his hammer. While Hawkeye, Tony, Rhodes and Banner fail to lift the hammer, Steve manages to make the hammer nudge a little, which attracted Thor's attention. Thor stated that the reason why none of them could lift it was because they were not worthy.

Their celebrations were interrupted by Ultron who attacked them. After defeating Ultron, Thor grabbed Tony by the neck and blamed it on him. The team began work on tracking Ultron down and head towarded South Africa where Vibranium was located. The team fought the Maximoff twins but Wanda subdued them with visions. Thor's vision caused him to investigate the nature of it since it concerned a bleak future for Asgard. After arriving at a safe house belonging to Hawkeye, Thor immediately left and met up with Dr. Selvig who led him to a cavern in which its waters allowed Thor to reenter the vision and see the Infinity Stones.

Armed with this knowledge, Thor immediately returns to the Avengers HQ where Tony and Steve were fighting over whether or not to activate the new organic body with JARVIS uploaded into it. Thor ended the fight by using lighting to charge up the casket thus activating the body. He explained to everyone his vision and revealed the existence of the Infinity Stones to them. The robot called himself Vision and assured everyone that he would help them fight Ultron and to show it, he handed Thor his hammer successfully lifting it which shocked Thor and everyone in the room. The Avengers succeeded in stopping Ultron at the cost of the death of Quicksilver. At the new Avengers HQ, Thor told Steve and Tony that he would return to Asgard to learn more of the Infinity Stones and decided to let Vision keep the Mind Stone since he proved his worth by lifting the hammer and also feeling that it would be safe with Vision.

Doctor Strange

"So Earth has... wizards now?"
―Thor[src]

Thor met with Stephen Strange at the Sanctum Sanctorum in New York. Strange agreed to help Thor and Loki locate their father in order to expedite the brothers' return to Asgard.

Thor: Ragnarok

Two years after the Avengers defeated Ultron, Thor left earth to search for answers and more knowledge on the Infinity Stones, Thor found himself in chains and prisoner of Surtur who planned to destroy Asgard by fulfilling the prophecy of Ragnarok. Thor learned from Surtur that Odin was not on Asgard, Thor used Mjölnir to escape and destroy Surtur, keeping his crown. Thor returned to Asgard and sent Surtur's crown down to the vaults, but then found that Heimdall had been replaced as sentry of the Bifrost Bridge by Skurge who explained that Odin accused Heimdall of treachery causing Heimdall to flee.

Reaching Asgard, Thor saw a massive statue of Loki as well as Odin lounging around watching a play about Loki's 'heroic sacrifice' while fighting the Dark Elves. Realizing what had happened, Thor quickly forced Loki, who usurped and disguised himself as Odin, to drop his charade and demanded to know what happened to Odin. Loki had placed Odin under a spell and dumped him in a retirement home in New York. By the time they got there, it was being demolished. Before they can plan their next move, Loki was pulled through a hole and a card with an address was left behind. Heading there, Thor met Dr. Strange, who agreed to help him find Odin on the condition that all Asgardians leave Earth. Thor agreed, and after doing some research during which Thor was constantly teleported around the New York Sanctum Sanctorum much to his displeasure, Doctor Strange found that Odin was in Norway. He released Loki from his endless fall, and when Loki went to attack, an exasperated Strange unceremoniously sent them both through a portal.

Thor and Loki found Odin in Norway overlooking a cliff having shaken off Loki's spell and he admitted that he was dying and Ragnarok was approaching in the form of Hela, his true first-born child. Odin told Thor and Loki that their sister was completely consumed by darkness and was sealed away but now she was returning. He apologized to them for failing them before dying and disappearing. As soon as he died, Hela emerged from her prison and engaged the pair in brief small talk. Seeing that she won't be reasoned with, Thor threw Mjölnir towards her. Hela easily caught and effortlessly destroyed it. Loki, seeing that they didn't stand a chance, asked to be returned to Asgard; however, Hela also entered the portal, expelled Loki and then Thor from it at different points and then reached Asgard.

Thor was deposited by the portal on a planet filled entirely by garbage and found himself attacked by several scavengers. Now hammer-less, he was quickly overpowered before his attackers were scared off by the hard-drinking bounty hunter Scrapper 142. She captured Thor and took him to the Grandmaster who was delighted with his newest acquisition and decided to put him up against his champion fighter. Thor, now restrained with an implanted shock device, learnt that Loki was also present and had been there for weeks, time moving far quicker on Sakaar, during which he had found favor with the Grandmaster. Not wishing to jeopardize his position, Loki pretended not to care and Thor was thrown in the dungeons where he befriended the Kronan Korg who explained that all who had gone up against the champion had been killed.

Thor was taken to the arena and put up against the champion who was announced as the Incredible Hulk. Thor was overjoyed to see his old teammate and tried to make him transform back into Bruce Banner but it doesn't work and Hulk thrashed him. Eventually, Thor stopped holding back and began to fight, at one point having a vision of Odin causing him to channel raw lightning. Just as he was about to win the Grandmaster, not wanting to see his champion be beaten shocked Thor into submission.

After their fight, Thor spoke to Hulk in private. Thor learned that he hadn't transformed back into Banner since leaving Earth two years earlier. Looking out the window, Thor spotted the Quinjet that Hulk had left Earth with still in one piece and potentially could be used to escape. Thor discovered that Scrapper 142 was actually a Valkyrie, an Asgardian who was part of an elite all-female group who were sent up against Hela during her previous assault but were all killed, Valkyrie being the only survivor. Thor tried to convince her to help, but she initially refused.

Although Hulk was happy in his life and wanted to stay, he helped Thor acquire the control device for his electronic restraint allowing him to remove it. Thor escaped from Hulk's apartment and reached the Quinjet, but was chased by Hulk who smashes it half apart. Thor activated Black Widow's last message to him and caused Hulk to transform back into Bruce Banner. Thor explained to Banner, whose last memories were of Sokovia during Ultron's offensive, what had happened. Banner, unable to believe Hulk was able to remain in control for two years, didn't want to transform again knowing that if he did then he would likely remain as Hulk forever. Valkyrie met up with Loki and the two engaged in a brief fight, and after Loki learned where she came from, he used his powers to make her remember her last encounter with Hela. This caused Valkyrie to have a change of heart and she decided to help Thor return to Asgard, and showed her good will by beating and chaining up Loki. Reunited, Thor and Loki head down to steal a ship; however, Loki attempted to betray Thor to the Grandmaster. Thor however had expected this and had put the shocking device onto Loki's back. Thor told his brother he'd hoped he would at least show some capacity for growth and even begin to change for the better, but now he understood that Loki would always be a trickster. He left the shocking device turned on with the remote just out of reach.

Thor, Banner and Valkyrie stole the Grandmaster's party ship and, escaping the Grandmaster's clutches, left through a passageway known as the Devil's Anus. Reaching Asgard just as Hela was about to destroy the remaining population who had attempted to escape through the Bifrost, Thor engaged her in a vicious battle but was still overpowered and lost an eye. Feeling he was useless without his hammer, Thor had a vision of Odin who explained to his son that the hammer simply channeled his powers reminding him he was the God of Thunder. Odin also told him that anywhere can be Asgard, as long as its people survive so would the society. Now realizing his true power, Thor unleashed a massive lightning bolt sending Hela flying. As Valkyrie and Heimdall attempted to hold off Hela's army, Loki united with Korg and other escaping fighters, had procured a ship which he used to evacuate the Asgardians. Banner transformed back into Hulk to fight the Fenris Wolf. Skurge, feeling guilt over having ever gone along with Hela, sacrificed himself to ensure the ship managed to get away.

Thor united with Valkyrie and Loki knowing Hela would soon be back as she was only growing stronger from Asgard's power. Thor realized that he couldn't prevent Ragnarok but must instead bring it about, and sent Loki down to the vaults to throw Surtur's crown into the living flame. Loki revived Surtur and escaped the Vault but not before taking the Tesseract. Surtur started laying waste to the kingdom and killed Hela. Thor escaped with Loki, Hulk, Heimdall, Valkyrie, Korg and the surviving civilians and prisoners just before Asgard was completely decimated. Although Thor was upset about the destruction of his home, he knew that he had to do it to prevent the extinction of his people. Finally, he met his destiny and took the throne on the bridge where his first order was to return to Earth.

Loki worried over Thor's decision to return to Earth knowing that he won't be very welcome there since during his last visit he tried to take over the planet. Thor assured his brother that he felt everything would be fine, just as the Sanctuary II loomed over them.

Avengers: Infinity War

Thanos and the Black Order members, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive and Cull Obsidian attacked the Asgardian ship. After the attack, Thanos and Black Order walked among the corpses of the slain Asgardians. Thanos faced Loki and demanded the Tesseract, or else he would kill Thor. Thanos already had the Power Stone in the Infinity Gauntlet after taking it by force from Xandar. Loki let Thanos go ahead to kill Thor, but he relented and presented the Tesseract. However, Hulk attacked Thanos and got in a few good punches before Thanos swiftly defeated Hulk. Heimdall used the last of his strength to send Hulk through Bifrost taking him back to Earth. Thanos impaled Heimdall through the heart. Loki appeared to surrender to Thanos and join him, but he instead made a futile attempt to kill him. Thanos grabbed Loki by the throat and squeezed until he crushed Loki's neck, killing him as Thor could only watch in anguish. Thanos cracked open the Tesseract to get the Space Stone, and he and his children left. Thor crawled over to Loki's body as the ship exploded.

The Guardians of the Galaxy made their way to answer the distress signal sent from the Asgardian ship. They found the ship's ruins and the dead Asgardians. Thor hit their windshield and they brought him on board. After Thor explained himself, he learnt of Gamora's connection to Thanos as his adopted daughter. Thor figured that Thanos was headed to Knowhere to get the Reality Stone from the Collector. Thor planned to head to the planet Nidavellir where a weapon powerful enough to kill Thanos could be forged. Rocket and Groot tagged along with Thor since they wanted to get their hands on some weapons too. The rest of the Guardians headed to Knowhere.

Thor, Rocket and Groot continued towards Nidavellir. On the way, Rocket gave Thor a new eye to make up for what Hela took from him. They got to Nidavellir and found it dark and not moving. When they touched down on the planet, they were attacked by the dwarf king Eitri, who was the sole survivor of the planet after Thanos wiped out his people after Eitri had completed forging the Infinity Gauntlet. Thor asked Eitri to forge him a weapon powerful enough to kill Thanos. Eitri told Thor that they needed to restart the heart of a dying star. Thor got the rings on Nidavellir turning, even having to turn the beam on himself, which caused severe burns to Thor. Eitri used the Uru to forge the weapon an axe and hammer put together named Stormbreaker. The new weapon would grant Thor the power to defeat Thanos and channel the Bifrost, however it had no handle. Groot managed to put it together by growing his arm into a handle and cutting it from his body, finishing Stormbreaker. Thor held out his hand and summoned Stormbreaker.

Thor joined the Avengers and the Wakandan army lead by T'Challa in the battle in Wakanda with Rocket and Groot by channeling the Bifrost with Stormbreaker. Thor with Stormbreaker proved to be massively powerful against the Outriders.

When Thanos arrives in Wakanda. Despite their combined efforts, the Avengers could barely touch him. Steve Rogers attempted to take Thanos on, but was taken out with a swift punch. Wanda reluctantly used her powers to destroy the Mind Stone and Vision as he declared his love for her. However, Thanos used the Time Stone to reassemble Vision, just so he could tear the Mind Stone from his head and kill him for good.

Thor arrived on the scene and struck Thanos with a lightning bolt. Thanos fired an energy beam in response the Asgardian blocked the beam by catapulting Stormbreaker directly through it. The axe struck Thanos in the chest, gravely wounding him. Thanos was weakened by his injury, Thor forced the blade of the axe deeper. Thanos taunted Thor that he should have aimed for his head, and before Thor could react, Thanos snapped his fingers. Energy surged from the Gauntlet, with a blinding light flooding the battlefield the universe was about to be altered on an unprecedented scale. After the snapped the gauntlet was fried, but the stones remained intact. Thanos disappeared through a portal. Suddenly, Bucky Barnes starts to crumble to dust in front of Steve. The same starts to happen to T'Challa, Sam Wilson, Wanda, and Groot, as well as most of the Wakandan army leaving Thor and the others in horror and despair as half of all life in the universe disappeared.

Character traits

In Thor, initially, Thor starts out as a brash, arrogant, boastful, immature, irresponsible, headstrong and hot-headed prince who defies the will of his father and places his selfish needs before that of those around him. Due to his mighty power and appearance, he felt that he was entitled to rule with an iron fist. However, once he arrives on earth and meets Jane Foster, who shows him kindness and love, Thor is smitten and begins to develop a humble and compassionate heart, as well as selfless and moral traits.

Even as a child, Thor was bloodthirsty as he jesting that he'll hunt down the Frost Giants and slay them all if he becomes king, however, this trait of his completely disappeared; as a result of Jane's influence.

Despite the negative traits at the time, Thor at least possessed some traits of honor, as he supported his friend, Sif in her goals to become a great warrior, while most others would not take her seriously.

In The Avengers, likely as a result of Jane's influence; Thor has developed something of a sense of humor. He can also sometimes be short-tempered; to the point of being hot-headed, especially when insulted or disrespected, like when he met with Tony Stark for the first time, however, since regaining his powers, Thor has tried his best to control his temper.

In Thor: The Dark World, Thor has greatly matured; to the point of being responsible, as he has learnt from his previous mistakes and has grown to such lengths that he has surpasses Loki Laufeyson and even Odin Borson, in terms of intelligence and wisdom, as he was the first to recognize that Odin was allowing his grief over Frigga's death to cloud his judgment, while Thor also mourned for his mother, he knew fully well that Odin's plans were suicidal and that it was not what Frigga would have wanted, he even went as far as to free Loki, successfully appealing to Loki's love for their mother, Frigga. Thor proved that he still loved Loki despite all he did, as he was (genuinely) saddened and grief-stricken when Loki (seemingly) died and promised to report his bravery to Odin and respectfully stated to "Odin", unaware that it was actually his father, that Loki had died honorably.

Although Thor was destined to become the king of Asgard, however, he eventually realized, that he couldn't actively protect the Nine Realms from the throne, as he selflessly denied his birthright, even offering Mjölnir to (who he thought was) Odin.

In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor underwent another vast change as he witnessed the death of his father, Odin and his mighty hammer Mjölnir was destroyed. Humbled greatly by the clearly superior power and skill possessed by his revealed older half-sister, Hela Odinsdottir and his powerlessness to save Odin, Thor lost any arrogance he once had, as displayed by how he pleaded for Valkyrie to see reason and help him stop Hela rather than acting demanding as he would have with any other Asgardian.

Thor also initially resented Loki once more, as he caused the death of Odin and refused blatantly to help him rule Sakaar, acting cold towards him, and later on clearly being amused when intending to sick the Hulk on Loki. However, Thor still remains ever-confident and brave, as he was confident he would win against the Grandmaster's champion despite his reputed fierceness and faced Hela despite having been completely outclassed before without hesitation. He also still had the compassion to lecture Loki instead of just kill him despite his attempted betrayal. Thor had also finally grew to be more intelligent than Loki, as he effortlessly outsmarted him, predicting his betrayal as being very obvious and sneaking an Obedience Disk on him, catching the Trickster completely off-guard.

Thor at long last fully could see things as clearly as Odin would at his prime, as he finally realized that Asgard didn't matter as long as the Asgardians could live on. Henceforth, he did not hesitate to order Loki to summon Surtur and destroy Asgard, which earned him Loki's praise due to even Loki stating it was an insane but well-thought plan.

In Avengers: Infinity War, the deaths of Loki, Heimdall and half of the surviving Asgardians has caused Thor to return to some of his old wrathful ways, filled with a murderous desire to kill Thanos in cold blood for his ruthless massacre. This rage has clouded Thor's judgement, as although he is still no longer arrogant, displayed by his humble statement of how he believed it was only because of fate wanting him alive that he is still breathing due to how many enemies had wanted him dead, he made the fatal mistake of not striking Thanos in the head, which Thanos openly mocked of, as he was not at all surprised that Thor's rage would make him want to goad Thanos first before killing him and passively criticized him for his selfishness, allowing Thanos to still wipe out half the universe anyway.

The fact that Thor is the only surviving member of the Asgardian Royal Family, has left him with great sadness and grief, as he has practically lost all he held most dear and the fact he had condemned Loki before his death further added salt into injury. He even lamented the death of his ruthless sister Hela.

In Avengers: Endgame, following the events of the Decimation, Thor found himself riddled with guilt and depression in the knowledge that his own fury had facilitated the devastation and that half the universe's life forms were erase from existence due to Thanos' truculence, his wounds deepen with shame and remorse upon discovering that Thanos had destroyed all six of the Infinity Stones (Space Stone, Power Stone, Reality Stone, Mind Stone, Time Stone and Soul Stone respectively) as a result; there was (at the time) no way to restore the universe's life forms back into existence. He then kills the mad titan without hesitation, finally avenging the death of his people, but this brought no semblance of peace for him at all.

Even five years after Thanos' death, Thor still continues to be haunted by his failure to stop the titan and suffers in the belief that he had not been able to embody the qualities of an ideal king that had been imbued into him throughout his entire childhood. Upon learning that the Avengers planned to reverse the destruction of Thanos' past crimes via time-travel (Time Heist) as the Infinity Stones still existed in the past, he initially refuses to assist; until the advent of seeing his mother, Frigga once again (which was prior to her death at the hands of Algrim) Frigga tells him that he had indeed failed and that this made him just like anyone else.

Thus, Thor comes to terms with his own mistakes in the realisation and acknowledgement that no individual is perfect, not even a king, during the Battle of Earth, Thor bravely faced the 2014 Thanos alongside his fellow Avengers, he also did not display any signs of his previous rage towards the titan, which had initially been fuelled by the latter wiping out half of Thor's people, after the Battle of Earth, Thor has returned to his former-self, he also cedes the throne of New Asgard to Brunnhilde, in order to pursue a voyage of self-discovery. As Thor joins the Guardians of the Galaxy in his soul searching mission, as he feels something amiss and it is very likely that Thor will ultimately come to embrace his destiny and return to his rightful place as the king of New Asgard, once he finds peace within his true-self.

Powers

  • Asgardian Physiology: As an Asgardian, Thor possesses multiple powers and attributes that make him an extremely powerful individual. As he is the son of Odin Borson, his powers even surpass most other Asgardians with the exceptions of Odin himself and Hela Odinsdottir, Thor's sister. Since Odin and Hela's deaths, Thor is the most powerful Asgardian alive and one of the most powerful beings in the universe.
    • Superhuman Strength: Thor is much stronger than humans and many other extra-terrestrial beings. He is able to overpower hordes of enemies including humans, Frost Giants, Chitauri, Marauders, Dark Elves, Ultron Sentries and various other species within or beyond the Nine Realms. Thor can lift or move immensely heavy objects effortlessly, he was able to flip a large, wide ceremonial table over on Asgard and easily catch a falling car with one arm during the Battle of Sokovia, saving a family trapped inside it. He can also crush and break extremely durable objects like Iron Man's gauntlets with his bare hands. Using his immense strength Thor was able to block a crushing blow from Hulk with his own arm and even punch the latter in the face hard enough to make him stagger. Thor's strength combined with Mjölnir makes him incredible formidable. He can swing his hammer with great speed and force, allowing him to break barriers and highly durable objects such as Hulk's containment unit and the Bifrost Bridge and stand his own against or overcome foes, such as the Destroyer, Leviathans, Hulk and Kronans. During the Contest of Champions, Thor's strength and combat skills made him capable of dominating Hulk, capable of staggering the green goliath with his punches alone and sending him flying across the arena with a single hammer blow as well as even restraining him. After Thor mostly unlocked his full power, his strength was amplified, to the point that he was able to contend with Hela during their final battle, managing to lift her off her feet and throw her to Valkyrie, fighting her to a standstill alongside Valkyrie. He was also able to easily swing around Rocket's Benatar space pod at great speeds and hold open the massive forge of Nidavellir long enough for Eitri to heat the metal. Thor threw Stormbreaker with enough force that it was able to slice through a beam from the completed Infinity Gauntlet and lodge deep into Thanos' chest, but the 2014 Thanos had to use both hands to overpower Thor's attempts to stop him from stabbing him with his own axe.
    • Superhuman Durability: Thor's skin, muscle and bone tissue are several times denser than that of humans which makes him extremely durable. Gamora claimed that his muscles felt as if they were "made of Cotati metal fibers" suggesting they were hard and firm. Even when he was stripped of his powers, Thor was still amazingly durable, due to his dense body, withstanding being hit by a van with ease and only being killed by a punch from the Destroyer. Thor is able to withstand powerful energy blasts, immense blunt force trauma, falls from great heights, explosions and various other opposing forces. He also survived a direct near point-blank range blast from Gungnir blasting him out of Odin's chamber and falling several hundred feet to the ground, displaying no visible signs of injury. Thor withstood a 400%-charged repulsor blast from Iron Man, was completely unaffected and uninjured by Quicksilver smashing into him at supersonic speeds, took a mighty punch from Hulk with only a minor nosebleed, withstood the full force of the Destroyer's energy blasts without any permanent damage. Thor's physique allows him to shrug off minor injuries such as small stab wounds from Asgardian blades, or allows him to withstand a direct blow in the face from a massive Frost Giant and laugh afterwards. He resisted the direct destruction of the city of Novi Grad followed by one kilometer drop in the sea, and was only momentarily unconscious. However, when matched with a rare enemy that is equal to or even stronger than himself, Thor will eventually sustain injuries and increasingly show signs of exertion and fatigue. He sustained no permanent damage and managed to continue fighting afterwards from being stabbed with Hela's Necroswords, which easily killed not only the Einherjar with a single hit but also the Warriors Three, who had greater durability than most other Asgardians. During the Contest of Champions, Thor withstood numerous blows to the face from Hulk with minimum damage and was still able to get up with no problem, whereas Loki, who was extremely resilient in his own right, was completely wiped out by being attacked by Hulk. After Thor mostly unlocked his full powers, he became even more resilient as he was able to shrug off Hela's attacks and even managed to remain conscious after taking multiple blows from Thanos, who was able to swiftly pummel Hulk to unconsciousness. One of his greatest feats of durability was being able to survive the full force of the Nidavellir star, although it left his body severely charred and knocked him unconscious he was still able to survive. Thor's physical constitution is so strong the he is able to survive exposure to the power of the Infinity Stones, as evidenced when he was able to quickly recover from being hit by the Reality Stone's powers in his battle with Malekith and even remain conscious after having Thanos repeatedly press the force of the Power Stone against his head, which if touched by beings less powerful would instantly obliterate them. However, he did suffer excruciating pain every time Thanos pressed it against him and prolonged exposure would likely eventually kill him. Thor was able to withstand the 2014 Thanos' punches with only minor bruises and bleeding scars, and even while hampered by his poor lifestyle and subsequent weight gain, he was still far more durable than most of the other Avengers.
    • Superhuman Endurance: Thor has an extreme amount of endurance, he does not tire easily and does not give up even when faced with a more powerful foe. He possesses far more stamina than normal humans and many other extra-terrestrial beings, allowing him to remain physically active for long periods of time.
    • Superhuman Speed: Thor can move at high speeds, allowing him to tackle Hulk through the wall of a Helicarrier in a split second. In battle, while holding back, he is easily fast enough to contend with the extremely fast Loki in combat and although his adopted brother is capable of outmanoeuvring him when he is holding back, when Thor unleashed his rage, he was able to easily catch Loki off-guard, disarm him of his scepter and then brutally attack him without Loki being able to react.
    • Superhuman Agility: Despite his size and mass, Thor is far more agile than normal humans and many other extra-terrestrial species. He was able to dodge and outmanoeuvre Hulk in battle and can easily keep up with Loki even whilst holding back. While his five years of constant drinking did hamper his agility, he was still able to dodge attacks with a level of agility that is seldom seen in humans.
    • Superhuman Reflexes: Thor's reflexes are fast enough that he can react and dodge objects when traveling at high speeds. He was able to dodge blasts of Odinforce from the Destroyer, Hulk's blows in the Contest of Champions and reacts with great speed to all incoming attacks.
    • Accelerated Healing Factor: Despite being incredibly durable and resistant to injury, Thor can still be harmed. If he does sustain an injury, Thor's metabolism allows him to heal much faster, more extensively and efficiently than humans. Seconds after being stabbed in the stomach by Loki using Gungnir on the Bifrost Bridge, Thor called forth a thunderbolt with Mjölnir knocking down Loki and stood up completely healed. His most impressive healing feat was surviving in the core of a reigniting star so he could forge his new weapon, Stormbreaker. While he was only left as a charred husk he was able to regenerate in a matter of minutes. His regenerative healing factor is not powerful enough to regrow limbs or appendages as proven when Hela cut out his eye.
    • Superhuman Immunity: Thor can withstand the extreme cold of Jotunheim and the extreme heat of Muspelheim. He can also stomach alcohol with no effect that is strong enough to intoxicate a normal human with only a sip.
    • Superhuman Longevity: Like all Asgardians, Thor is not immortal but ages far slower than humans. Despite being over 1,000 years old, he still maintains the physical appearance of a man in his prime. As of Avengers: Endgame, Thor is now 1,059 years old.
  • God of Thunder: As the God of Thunder, Thor possesses unique powers that other Asgardians do not have. Before the destruction of Mjölnir, Thor's hammer acted as a conduit for these abilities.
    • Weather Manipulation: Thor was born with the power to control storms and specifically lightning. Even before Thor unlocked his powers, he still displayed a level of control over weather, able to manipulate parts of it. Most notably, he was able to summon storm clouds to generate lightning and summon his Asgardian armor. He also began to generate sparks of lightning from his hands after becoming furious. When he began to unlock the full potential of his powers during his encounter with Hela, he showed that he was capable to generate even larger storm clouds and thunder.
    • Lightning Manipulation: Thor can generate, create and project electricity from both of his hands or his entire body. Whenever Thor utilizes or is about to utilize his electrical powers; both of his eyes glow bright blue. Thor's electric bolts were strong enough to blacken an Aether-enhanced Malekith, take down two Chitauri Leviathans and a large amount of the aliens, and generate incredible levels of electricity to help Iron Man obliterate the falling Sokovia City. Following Odin's death, Thor finally fully unlocked his electrical powers and his powers over lightning are enhanced to the point where he could generate incredible amounts of electrical energy from his own body and summon thunder and lightning from the sky, all without the use of Mjölnir. His new ability allows him to seamlessly integrate lightning into his fighting against Hulk in the Contest of Champions, and then later against Hela and her undead army. He is able to use lightning to pull and hurl enemies, blast projectiles to pieces, and infuse his weapons with electricity. Thor's generated lightning bolts grew so powerful that he was able to easily send an enraged Hulk flying back and visibly stun him for a time and even temporarily stun and knock down Hela with a single respective blast. Thor was even able to cast a lightning bolt powerful enough to destroy a portion of the Bifrost Bridge that Hela was standing on to ultimately send her crashing down into the water beneath. Wielding Stormbreaker, Thor's powers over electricity grew greatly to the point that he was able to generate a lightning blast powerful enough to knock Thanos back a considerable distance, although it did no harm to the Titan. The greatest display of his electricity manipulation, however, is when Thor charges Stormbreaker with all of his electrical power, and throws it at Thanos with all his might. The charged weapon proved powerful enough to quickly slice through a beam fired from the completed Infinity Gauntlet and grievously injure Thanos in a single strike, with Thanos himself saying that Thor may have been able to kill him had he aimed for the head.
  • Flight: Thor is able to fly at amazing speeds and at high altitudes. Initially, he had to hurl Mjölnir with such force that he could hold onto the hammer and propel himself great distances, effectively giving the appearance of flight and covering great distances. He was able to launch himself into the air from the Asgardian palace to the middle of the Bifrost within moments unaided by Mjölnir. But after Mjölnir was destroyed by Hela, it was revealed that Thor is actually able to fly without the aid of any mystical artifacts, as the hammer was only focusing his power of flight, but it was never truly the source of that said power.
  • Teleportation: With Stormbreaker, Thor can summon the Bifrost and teleport to any location with a mere thought.
  • Mental Link: When Thor linked his mind with Heimdall, his eyes became the same gold color. Heimdall showed him that Asgard was in an utterly dire situation as Heimdall was being forced to evacuate the Asgardians before Hela could imprison or execute them and saw everything the Asgardian warrior saw.

Abilities

  • Genius-Level Intellect: For over thousands of years, Thor has gained vast knowledge of the Nine Realms' cultures and religions. Although he was deemed by both Odin and Loki to be foolish and naïve, but overtime, Thor would eventually manage to surpass both his adoptive brother and father.
  • Master Tactician: Thor is an excellent tactician, although he prefers to explode on to the battlefield and smash his enemies to rubble than utilize cunning tactics, overtime he overcame his brashness as he matured. When presented with the threat of the Bifrost destroying Jotunheim, with the Bridge having gone too far to be stopped, Thor came up with a plan to stop the massacre of the Frost Giants by destroying the Bridge, which not even Loki could foresee. Thor successfully defied Odin and went to the Dark Elves with Jane, succeeding in breaking Loki out of prison and having him taken to the shortcut that takes them to Svartfleheim. Although his plan to destroy the Aether didn't work, he still managed to successfully fool the Dark Elves alongside Loki by planning to be betrayed by the latter while they were actually working together. After being briefly separated from Malekith and reunited with Foster and Selvig, Thor came up with a plan to make use of the teleportational devices to send Malekith away from the Convergence and then crush him with his ship, which successfully ended the threat of the Dark Elves.
  • Master Leader: Even before Thor became fully mature, he was already a great leader, as he successfully led Lady Sif and the Warriors Three for years into several dangerous battles and inspired into them enough loyalty to get them to defy even Odin, as he persuaded them to join him in fighting the Jotuns despite Odin's orders. After he truly learned his lesson, Thor became a much wiser and more able leader, with him being the primary leader of many Asgard's battles to stabilize the Nine Realms following the Bifrost being repaired and doing so successfully, greatly impressing Odin to the point that he was seen worthy of the throne. After leading the Revengers to defeat Hela, Thor ascended to the throne, now having confidence in his ability to restore the Asgardians on Earth.
  • Master Hand-To-Hand Combatant: Thor is one of the most skilled fighters in Asgard. Thor is trained in the arts of war and various fighting techniques by his teachers in Asgard. He is an expert marksman, and is masterful in all areas of combat, including hand-to-hand and various forms of weaponry available in Asgard with over centuries of combat experience. He is very cunning and intuitive in battle, having fought and defeated over a hundred warriors in Nornheim and battled hordes of Frost Giants with great ease in Jotunheim. He was able to defeat an entire squad of S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives, while powerless and mortal and deprived of Mjölnir, with only his vast fighting skills beating every single one of them with only his bare hands and raw physical strength. Coulson stated that "he made his men, some of the most highly trained professionals in the world, look like a bunch of minimum wage mall cops". He was able to maneuver around the larger Hulk and strike him with ease. Thor's skills allowed him to fairly easily dominate and defeat the Hulk in the Contest of Champions, after Hulk had defeated every other competitor. After acquiring his full powers, Thor tore through many Berserkers with no effort and managed to fight Hela to a prolonged standstill alongside Valkyrie until Surtur was revived. With Stormbreaker and his armor, Thor effortlessly slaughtered many Outriders and even managed to catch Thanos wielding the Gauntlet off-guard and almost kill him. When facing the 2014 Thanos, Thor was able to disarm him of his sword.
  • Master Hammer Fighter: After centuries of practice wielding Mjölnir, Thor has become masterful in fighting with a hammer and is proficient in hammer throwing. He can even block energy shots with Mjölnir, from both Loki's staff and Chitauri weaponry. Not using his hammer for several years did little to hamper Thor's skill in hammer combat, as he was quickly able to dual-wield Mjölnir along with Stormbreaker effectively against Thanos.
  • Master Swordsman: Thor is a highly skilled swordsman, during the Contest of Champions, Thor utilized a pair of blades and managed to block several strikes from Hulk with them. In his second confrontation against Hela, Thor used another pair of blades and was able to momentarily hold his own against her before being disarmed.
  • Master Spearman: Thor is a highly skilled spearman, in his second confrontation against Hela, Thor utilize Gungnir, as he managing to to put up a fairly good fight; but was ultimately overpowered by her.
  • Master Axeman: Thor is a highly skilled axeman, he was able to wield his newly forged Stormbreaker relatively easily against several Outriders, single-handedly taking down an entire ship of Outriders and even able to severely injure Thanos with a single throw. He also was able to stand his ground against the 2014 Thanos using his sword, even able to disarm him and slice him when he was unarmed.
  • Multilingual: Thor is capable of fluently speaking English and several other alien languages, including Flora colossus.
  • Intimidation: As the God of Thunder, Thor commands an intimidating presence to the point where several of his enemies across the Nine Realms fear him.

Equipment

  • Armor
    • First Set: Thor's first set of armor had a collared blue tunic with red piping, and black pants. Over the blue shirt he wore a black vest emblazoned with silver overlay. He wore a bright red cape that connected at the shoulders of his vest. His arms were covered in a form of chain-mail and he wore detailed, black, knee-high boots.
    • Second Set: Thor's second set of armor worn while fighting in the forest with Captain America and Iron Man. It was sleeveless with a black top covered in silver plates. It has blue pants and black boots. It had red wristbands covered with silver arm bracers. It also had a bright red cape. During Thor's stay on the Helicarrier he removed portions of his armor such as his cape, larger arm bracers and part of his chest plate, while in the more relaxed setting. While heading into the Battle of New York he re-donned his cape and heavier portions of his armor, adding to it a set of chain-mail sleeves as seen in the first set.
    • Third Set: Thor's third set of armor was a layered, collared, black vest with gold plates and blue accents worn over a chain-mail shirt. The vest continued into a loincloth which hung over chain-mail and leather pants. The sleeves ended at arm-bracers similar-looking to the vest with a red underside. He wore knee-high brown boots with gold piping. The third set also featured a bright red cape that was attached to the vest by two gold disks. During his time on Sakaar, Thor supplemented the then-damaged Third set with pieces of armor salvaged from the Sakaaran Armory, most prominently a teal pauldron on his left shoulder and a similarly-colored bracer on his right shin.
    • Fourth Set: Thor's fourth set of armor, donned following the escape of Asgard's destruction but before Thanos' attack, was comprised of a layered, collared black vest containing his recurring silver plates, navy blue pants and short strapped leather gloves. After attaining Stormbreaker, Thor added his signature red cape and chain-mail sleeves in preparation to the Fourth Set for his rematch with Thanos.
  • Stormbreaker: Stormbreaker is a mystical hammer-axe that is able to focus Thor's powers, acting as a conduit, it can also amplify the Asgardian king's physical attributes. Due to the weapon being comprised of Uru; it is almost completely indestructible, as Stormbreaker was able to withstand energy blasts created by all six Infinity Stones (Space Stone, Power Stone, Reality Stone, Mind Stone, Time Stone and Soul Stone respectively) it can even wound Thanos.
  • Cybernetic Eye: On their way to Nidavellir, Rocket handed to Thor a cybernetic eye to replace the right eye that he lost during his battle with Hela.

MCU Supercut - The Might of Mjolnir

Mjolnir Compliation !

  • Mjölnir: Thor has been entrusted with the mighty hammer Mjölnir, that was forged from the heart of a dying star. Thor's mystical hammer Mjölnir, which resembles a mallet rather than a war hammer, has a number of elemental powers. It has been stated by Odin himself that Mjölnir's power has no equal. Mjölnir itself is extremely durable like the Earth metal Adamantium, and, combined with the various enchantments placed upon it by Odin, it is, for all intents and purposes, indestructible. It has deflected three blast from the Destroyer (which was able to disintegrate anything that it hit) and return the blast back into the Destroyer. Thor often uses the hammer as a physical weapon, with almost nothing being capable of withstanding a hammer blow or throw (with the exception of Captain America's vibranium shield). As of Thor: Ragnarok, Mjölnir was destroyed by Hela Odinsdottir, though Thor was able to use a past version of the hammer in Avengers: Endgame.
  • Megingjörð: Megingjörð is mystical belt that was worn by Thor.
  • Retractable Swords: During the Contest of Champions, Thor prepared himself with two swords that are retractable; once wielded, the blades can appear during battle.
  • Doug's Mace and Shield: Thor also picked up Doug's mace and shield to wield in his battle with the Grandmaster's champion.
  • Eyepatch: After Thor lost his right eye in his final confrontation with Hela, Thor worn an eyepatch to cover his missing eye, it is similar in appearance to Odin Borson's eyepatch; except the eyepatch is silver in color. After Thor received his cybernetic eye from Rocket, to replace the right eye that he lost during his battle with Hela; he has stopped wearing the eyepatch.

Relationships

Appearances/Actors

Behind the scenes

  • Initially, Chris Hemsworth was dropped from consideration, but had a second chance thanks to Kevin Feige.
  • Hemsworth stated that he gained 20 pounds for the role by eating non-stop and revealed that "It wasn't until Thor that I started lifting weights, it was all pretty new to me".
  • Regarding his take of the character, Hemsworth said, "We just kept trying to humanize it all, and keep it very real. Look into all the research about the comic books that we could, but also bring it back to 'Who is this guy as a person, and what's his relationship with people in the individual scenes?'"
  • About approaching Thor's fighting style, he remarked, "First, we looked at the comic books and the posturing, the way [Thor] moves and fights, and a lot of his power seems to be drawn up through the ground. We talked about boxers, you know, Mike Tyson, very low to the ground and big open chest and big shoulder swings and very sort of brutal but graceful at the same time, and then as we shot stuff things became easier."
  • Hemsworth stated that he was able to maintain the strength he built up for Thor by increasing his food intake, consisting of a number of chicken breasts, fish, steak, and eggs a day. When asked exactly how much, Hemsworth joked, "My body weight in protein pretty much!"
  • Chris Hemsworth has commented briefly on the friction between The Avengers, focusing specifically on Thor and Captain America. "They're used to being leaders and if you put them all in a room, it's going to be about who runs the show," he said. "They all have some friction, absolutely, but it's about the journey of the team. However, the main reason for the team coming to blows is apparently a fairly simple one.The villainous Loki and his mysterious "alien" army. Thor has a different opinion about how this should be taken care of, because it's his brother," the actor revealed. "I think it's heartbreaking, because he feels very responsible for why Loki has spiraled off. He keeps trying to appeal to whatever good was once there".
  • Chris Hemsworth Calls The Avengers "Misfits". "There's a maturity to the character because of the journey he went on, certainly. He was a petulant sort of kid at the beginning of Thor, and by the end of it hopefully you walk away thinking that he is matured and there was a grounded quality to him that wasn't there before. There are certainly moments where Thor says things and there's a sideways glance from everybody; "What the hell is this guy talking about?". He's not quite the odd one out as much as he was in Thor. These guys, one of them wears an iron suit, one of them turns into a big, green monster. They all have these crazy personalities, and alter egos. They're misfits, and that's how they fit, in a funny way".
  • The two final choices for the role of Thor were Chris Hemsworth and his younger brother Liam Hemsworth.

Trivia

  • In the comics, Thor is from a parallel dimension. However, in the films, Thor is from another planet.
  • Before Chris Hemsworth was cast as Thor, Brad Pitt was rumored for the role of Thor; Channing Tatum and WWE wrestler Triple H were also considered for the part; Daniel Craig was the first choice; and Charlie Hunnam, Tom Hiddleston, Alexander Skarsgård, Chris Hemsworth's younger brother Liam Hemsworth and Joel Kinnaman tested for the role. Hiddleston would later be cast as Loki in the film.
  • The Marvel Comics character was adapted from the mythological Thunder God of the same name by the late Stan Lee, Larry Leiber and the late Jack Kirby.
  • The scene where Coulson finds Thor's hammer Mjölnir is shown after the credits in Iron Man 2. The scene was added to Iron Man 2 to continue Marvel's tradition of including tie-ins to the other sub-franchises in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • in the comics, Thor's human alias is Donald Blake. In the film, when Thor arrives on earth, Jane gives him clothing attire that once belonged to her ex-boyfriend Donald Blake. Later when Thor is captured and interrogated by Phil Coulson, Erik Selvig appears and informs Coulson that Thor is actually Donald Blake a member of his scientific staff. An agent confirms it by running a background check in the computer database and turns up a falsified document created by Jane of Thor assuming the identity of Dr. Donald Blake.
  • In Norse mythology, Thor and Sif are married.
  • Sif is also Thor's lover and main love interest in the comics, not just a friend or a teammate.
  • It is stated in The Avengers that Thor was able to get back to Earth thanks to the powers of Odin; however, Loki commented that Odin would have had to "summon up" a lot of "dark energy." This suggests that this action may be tiring, and possibly even dangerous or frowned upon by Odin, and was likely why the Bifrost meant so much to the Asgardians.
  • Thor's suit in Thor more closely resembles Oliver Coipel's sleeved redesign from J. Michael Straczynski's Thor miniseries rather than Jack Kirby's art. His trademark helmet is worn only once in the film, at the ceremony celebrating his would-be ascent to the throne of Asgard.
  • Although being primarily based on the Marvel Universe version of the character created by Stan Lee, Larry Leiber and Jack Kirby, the MCU version of Thor also shares some traits with the "Ultimate Marvel Universe" version of Thor. Both versions of the character go for a bearded look with no trademark helmet and neither have a human alter-ego as in the classic comics. Both are also accused of being a madman when claiming to be the God of Thunder.
  • In The Avengers, when Thor first appears on Earth, his "suit" is a variant of his Thor suit and resembles the classic Thor design by Jack Kirby, with no sleeves and his trademark cape. Later in the film, when on the Helicarrier, his costume nods towards the Ultimate version of the character based on art by Brian Hitch, which had no cape, no sleeves and stripped-down armor. In the third act of the film, Thor summons lightning which magically completes his armor, adding his armor, discs and chainmail sleeves as he looked in Thor, based on the 2007 redesign by Oliver Coipel. Whereas his Thor suit was black with silver discs, his suit in The Avengers is more blue-colored with much of the armor on his torso being silver. As Thor: The Dark World took more visual influence from Norse culture, Thor's outfit from then contained more chainmail and leather, and bronze-colored discs. His uniform in Avengers: Age of Ultron appears to be a minor variation on this suit.
  • Thor's debut film was the first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so explore ancient mythology, space travel and extraterrestrial life. These ideas are continued through Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers.
  • Thor's screen time in The Avengers is 25:52.
  • Thor's screen time in Avengers: Age of Ultron is 14:18.
  • Chris Hemsworth's role in Doctor Strange was uncredited.
