"You know all those dangerous mutants you hear about in the news? I'm the worst one."
―John Allerdyce [src]

John Allerdyce, also known as Pyro, is a class 4 mutant with the ability to manipulate fire.

John was a student at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters but was persuaded by Magneto to join the Brotherhood of Mutants.

Biography[]

X-Men[]

John Allerdyce attended Xavier's physics class before Wolverine walked in. He left along with his classmates Bobby Drake, Jubilee and Kitty Pryde. Later, in a class taught by Ororo Munroe, John manipulates a fireball behind his back in an attempt to show off to new classmate Rogue. Bobby froze the fireball with his cryogenesis, startling John so he dropped it and got in trouble.

Following Rogue's abduction and the X-Men's triumph in stopping Magneto's plans, John played table football with Bobby, Rogue and another boy from the school.

X2[]

"I can only manipulate the fire, I can't create it."
―John Allerdyce [src]

During the tour of the Museum of Natural History & Science, a human teenager took John's Zippo lighter to light a cigarette. Angered, John manipulated the flames and made them jump to the boy's top, setting him on fire, Bobby stepped in and put it out with his ice powers. The entire museum, apart from the mutants, came to a stand still by Professor X, who scolded John. Everyone was unfrozen and the class left the museum.

When the Mansion was attacked by William Stryker and his men, John escaped with Bobby, Rogue and Logan. The four of them headed to Boston to stay at Bobby's house until they could contact the other X-Men. When Bobby's family returned home, Ronny, Bobby's younger brother, was frightened by the fact his brother was a mutant and phoned the police. When the police arrived, they shoot Logan in the head provoking John to retaliate. Using his pyrokinetic abilities he subdued the police until Rogue absorbed his abilities to reduce the flames. Storm and Jean arrived in the X-Jet and picked up their students.

The X-Jet was pursued by fighter jets that fired at the X-Jet forcing it to crash-land. Magneto stopped it and requested the team's help. Seeing John's potential, Magneto asks him his "real name" to which John replied "Pyro". When the team reached Alkali Lake, Pyro, Iceman and Rogue were told to wait on the X-Jet. Pyro grew impatient of waiting and decided to go and help but was stopped in his tracks when Professor X initiated the attack against all mutants.

Once Magneto had finished, he and Mystique took Stryker's helicopter, Pyro approached them and joined the Brotherhood of Mutants.

X-Men: The Last Stand[]

"You're in over your head, Bobby. Maybe you should go back to school."
―Pyro[src]

Pyro attended the gathering of mutants at Holy Trinity Church where the Brotherhood recruited the Omegas to aid their cause. Pyro defended Magneto when Quill claimed he was just a man in a cape. With Callisto's help, Magneto was able to track down Mystique who was being transported in a mobile prison. When Mystique took a cure dart for Magneto, Pyro shot a stream of fire at the guard who shot the dart, flinging him from the truck.

Pyro1th

Pyro attended the protests outside of a Washington Public Health Clinic and had a brief confrontation with his former friend Iceman. After Bobby backed down, Pyro blew up the center.

Following Magneto as his second-in-command, Pyro was present when he Magneto made an announcement to his army. At Alcatraz Island, Pyro torched the cars that Magneto threw. Pyro fought Iceman and briefly gained the upper hand, but Iceman, now using his powers to the fullest, defeated and headbutted him, knocking him out.

Character traits[]

A troubled young man with the ability to control fire. A friend of Bobby and Rogue, John has anti-social tendencies because he is very angry at humans for how they treat the mutant community. Xavier's school promotes a peaceful and beneficial relationship between mutants and the rest of humanity, but when it is invaded by forces who would destroy all mutants, John, his fellow students and his teachers must join forces with the Brotherhood of Mutants, who advocate total domination over non-mutants. Magneto told him that "You are a god amongst insects; never let anyone tell you different".

As the two groups battle together against a relentless and cunning foe, John's dark side emerges, and he is drawn toward his ultimate identity as Pyro, a member of the Brotherhood. John wanted to be noticed, but he was not energized by doing good. Now, known as Pyro, this outsider has found somewhere he belongs and someone he can believe in. He is still a wise-ass with a temper to match his fiery gift, but his former rebelliousness has been replaced with extreme loyalty to Magneto. That loyalty does not waver as he and the other mutants of Magneto's Brotherhood face his former teachers and schoolmates in a battle whose outcome will determine the mutants' place in the larger human community.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Mutant Physiology: Pyro is a powerful, class 4 mutant who possesses pyrokinetic powers.
    • Pyrokinesis: Pyro can manipulate fire. He is able to cause any fire, no matter how small it is; to grow in size and intensity. He can shape and project this fire at will.
    • Superhuman Immunity: Pyro is completely immune to fire, as he cannot be burned or harmed by its effects; no matter how intense the flames are. He is also immune to extremely warm temperatures and environments.

Weaknesses[]

  • Pyrogenesis: As confirmed by Pyro himself, he can only manipulate fire and not generate it himself. This means he has to rely on a source of fire to be able to control it.

Equipment[]

  • Dual Wrist-Mounted Flamethrowers: Pyro is equipped with a flamethrower on both of his wrists, to generate fire for him to manipulate.

Former Equipment[]

  • Lighter: Pyro used to carry a lighter to create his own fire. But after becoming a member of the Brotherhood of Mutants, he abandoned this lighter in favour of dual wrist-mounted flamethrowers.

Relationships[]

Appearances/Actors[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • In X2, Pyro is shown examining a series of Drake family photos with an expression of envy; the commentary hints that it is because he comes from a dysfunctional home.
  • A deleted scene of X-Men shows Pyro listening to Rogue talking to the other girls behind his back so then (for unknown reasons) he grins and wants to impress her by creating a fireball behind his back. Bobby Drake freezes it and Ororo Munroe says "John", but in the extended scene she says "John, what did I tell you?" to which he responds "Sorry". He is later watching Bobby talking to Rogue. This could be that he has an interest in her.
  • Another deleted scene of X2, shows Pyro sitting down at night and Bobby and Rogue are struggling to build a campfire. Rogue says that he could help so Pyro takes a deep breath and the fire starts.

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, Pyro is Australian and his named was Saint-John Allerdyce. In the film, he's portrayed as an American teenager instead of Australian.
  • Iceman doesn't have a close connection with Pyro in the comics.
  • In the comics, Pyro never worked under the team's original mentor, Magneto. Instead, he has been loyal to Mystique and much later to Toad. In the film, he is loyal to Magneto.
