Project Distant Star Return is a NASA and A.T.C.U. orchestrated project which HYDRA leader Gideon Malick consults on. The project's sole purpose is to bring back the ancient Inhuman, It, to Earth from another world by sending an Inhuman army through a portal created by the Monolith. The project was developed in 2001 as Project Distant Star, which sent four scientists, Will Daniels, Austin, Taylor, and Brubaker through the Monolith to study the planet.

In 2001, Project Distant Star sent Will Daniels, Austin, Taylor, and Brubaker through the Monolith to study the planet. Once on the planet, Daniels' fellow astronauts began to go crazy and committed suicide because of It, leaving Daniels stranded.
Later in 2015, Simmons was captured by Daniels and then set free in his underground bunker on the planet. While down there, Daniels explained to Simmons his mission and the logo from his mission can been seen in the bunker.

Back at the Playground, Fitz notices the logo of the organization that sent Will through the portal looks a lot like one of the symbols on the English castle where they destroyed the Monolith.
