The Monolith was an ancient Kree construct that had the ability transport certain people and objects to a distant planet. According to Jiaying, the Monolith was created by the Kree as a way to destroy the Inhumans.
Centuries ago, it was used to banish the powerful Inhuman, Hive, while being used later in the 1800s to send a HYDRA nobleman through the portal in hopes of bringing It back. The Monolith was also used by NASA for Project Distant Star in 2001 to study the planet. The Monolith was then placed on the Iliad for safe keeping by S.H.I.E.L.D. before being transported to the Playground after the Iliad was compromised. The original Monolith was destroyed when S.H.I.E.L.D. brought Jemma Simmons back. It's later revealed by Gideon Malick that Wolfgang von Strucker had a fragment in his collection.
