Dr. Arnim Zola uses a train for transporting equipment to and from HYDRA bases. He has special access to communications in the locomotive. Zola's train was mainly used to transport him and the super HYDRA soldiers. It is likely that the locomotive was powered by the Tesseract like Zola's other inventions.
History[]
Captain America: The First Avenger[]
Captain America, Bucky, and Gabe Jones conducted a raid on the train. Unfortunately, Bucky fell from the train into an icy ravine; Zola was captured soon after.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier[]
Bucky Barnes is revealed to have survived his fall from the train and has been reprogramed by HYDRA into the Winter Soldier. Steve Rogers realizes that Zola's experiments on Bucky with the Super Soldier Serum in 1943 when he was captured must've allowed Bucky to survive the fall.
After encountering Steve, Bucky experiences several flashes of memory, including falling from the train and surviving but losing his left arm in the process. Found by German soldiers shortly thereafter, Bucky is taken to Zola who transforms him into the Winter Soldier.
