The Einherjar are warriors of Asgard who, during times of war, serve as soldiers and during times of peace, serve as guards of the royal palace and keep the peace on Asgard.
History
Thor
Einherjar stood as an honor guard during Thor's first coronation attempt, before being interrupted by a group of Frost Giants attempting to steal the Casket of Ancient Winters from Odin's Trophy Room.
Thor: The Dark World
During the attack of the Dark elves upon Asgard, the Einherjar fought valiantly against the invaders, but suffered significant casualties. This would be due in part to being completely unfamiliar with Dark Elf weaponry or tactics, as the Dark Elves had not been seen for 5,000 years.
