Caliban was a German mutant with the ability to track and sense other mutants. He once worked as an information broker and black marketeer in East Berlin.
Mystique relied on Caliban to fabricate identification for Nightcrawler so that he could be safely transported to the US. Later, Caliban was visited by Apocalypse, Death, Famine, and War. Apocalypse recruited Caliban's bodyguard, Psylocke, as one of his horsemen, after unlocking her powers.
40 years later In 2029, Caliban lives in an abandoned smelting plant on the Mexican border--with Logan, caring for a senile Charles Xavier. A year prior, Xavier had a seizure and his uncontrolled telepathy accidentally killed the X-Men--which is why he is in the care of Caliban and Logan.
When Donald Pierce comes looking for Laura at the smelting plant, he is knocked out by Laura. Logan orders Caliban to drop Pierce off on the road. Caliban puts him in a car---driving him out to the middle of nowhere. However, Pierce wakes up and Caliban is threatened and at gunpoint, then taken as a hostage by the Reavers. He is tortured by being exposed to sunlight which blisters his skin, until he agrees to track down Logan, Laura, and Charles.
Caliban however does his best to slow their progress by giving them misinformation or slowing their progress.
Caliban later detonates two grenades in the Reavers van, killing himself and some Reavers in the explosion.
In the 80s Caliban was a fairly selfish and self centered individual only concerned with money. By 2029 he had become a lot more noble and kinder such as helping Logan take care of an ailing Charles.
