  • Before being signed on to play Quicksilver, Aaron Taylor-Johnson spoke about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch's backstory stating they might have been abandoned by their parents, and that they grew up in Eastern Europe defending and looking out for themselves and each other. Scarlet Witch really is his guidance - emotionally she's the one who looks after him, and vice versa. He's very overprotective physically - he doesn't want anyone touching her.[49]
  • Ultron is opposed to human beings having free will in the film, as stated by Kevin Fiege: There is an element of free will that our heroes have, that all humans have, whether it’s Thor or Steve Rogers — and certainly Tony Stark is the poster boy for free will. That’s what Ultron resents.
  • One major character may get killed off in the film.[50]

  • DEBUNKED: Several years after the supposed death of Captain America, Hank Pym and Howard Stark begin constructing new mechanial soldiers for the United States Army. However, due to expenses the operation is canned and locked away. Fast forward to modern day, where S.H.I.E.L.D. has now shown itself to secretly be Hydra. Baron von Strucker, who we see in the mid-credit scene of Captain America, has his hands on many SHIELD crates that were unused or stolen. While looking through the crates von Strucker finds what looks like a 1950's version of Iron Man. Using stolen S.H.I.E.L.D. and Stark Industries technology Von Strucker upgrades the machine and powers it using the mind gem in Loki's scepter (last seen in Strucker's possession inthe mid-credits scene in The Winter Soldier). Finally, HYDRA upgrades Ultron with his infamous vibranium shell, which was in (SSR) S.H.I.E.L.D.'s possession since Captain America: The First Avenger.[55]
  • Black Widow's backstory will be explained.[56]
  • Joss Whedon has said that he took inspiration from The Godfather Part II and Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.[57]
  • Ultron will be after vibranium in fictional Wakanda, South Africa so that he can upgrade to a vibranium shell, Wanka is home of the Black Panther in the comics.[58]
  • Captain America and Baron Strucker will have some history.[59]
  • James Spader will be doing motion capture work for at least one iteration of the character, meaning that Ultron may take on a humanoid form as he has in the comics.[60]
  • Don Cheadle's role as Rhodey will be a cameo, he won't feature throughout the main story.[60]
  • Captain America or Iron Man will yell out the famous battle cry, "Avengers Assemble!".
  • CONFIRMED: The film may have a crossover with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..[61]

  • Hawkeye may be like a father-figure to Scarlet Witch.
  • DEBUNKED: Spider-Man will appear in the post credit scene.
  • There will be an end credit scene where Hank Pym finds Ultron's head.

Spoilers

  • CONFIRMED: Tony Stark is indeed bankrolling The Avengers this time out. With the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and it's subsequent "handover" to Phil Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Tony Stark takes on the role of global security by housing The Avengers in the former Stark Tower, now Avengers Tower (featuring the "A" on the building, as teased in both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the end of The Avengers), where he funds new tech, new costumes, and even a new Quinjet.
  • CONFIRMED: Tony Stark has created an army of Iron Man "drones" (much like the Iron Legion) and uses them to "keep the peace". The Avengers are not in hiding or attempting to keep a low profile. They are very public and "out" about their intention of keeping the world safe, especially with the absence of S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • CONFIRMED: Tony Stark will be wearing the Mark XLIII (43), a suit with less gold on it than the Mark 42 in Iron Man 3, but still more than in The Avengers. The chest core reactor will be back to the circular shape, with The Mark XLIV (44) being the Hulkbuster.[62][63]
  • CONFIRMED: All or most of The Avengers will be wearing an Avengers logo on their costumes, courtesy of the upgrade to each superhero's thanks to Stark. Black Widow will have 2 batons that have shocking ability as part of her new arsenal, Hawkeye will indeed be rocking the long sleeve jacket that is reminiscent of his comics costume and Hulk will now be wearing "stretchy pants" that grow and shrink with him when he goes back and forth between Banner and Hulk.
  • Age Of Ultron takes place and opens immediately after the Baron Von Strucker post credit scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The opening set piece and big action scene has The Avengers as a team attack the rogue outpost HYDRA cell run by Baron Von Strucker. He has Loki's staff, and also possesses Chitauri weaponry. The Avengers are there to basically clean it all up. Von Strucker also has the corpse of a Leviathan. Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch fight alongside Von Strucker against the Avengers. The Scarlett Witch uses her powers and cast a hex on the Hulk, thinking that the Leviathan is still alive. According to El Mayimbe, after The Avengers have successfully completed their mission, capturing Loki's Septer and the bad guys, they head back to Avengers Tower to celebrate. While they're enjoying the good times, the "whole team takes turns trying to pick up Thor's hammer, Mjolnir". When Iron Man/Tony Stark attempts to pick up Thor's hammer, his armored arm comes off, and when Captain America/Steve Rogers tries he's only able to "budge" it. Rhodey (Don Cheadle) is will be making his cameo appearance during this scene.[64]
  • There will be 3 different versions of Ultron throughout the movie. His original state is very rudimentary, but, as he does in the comics, Ultron is constantly upgrading. He is coated in Vibranium and spends the film seeking out more of the raw material to continue his "upgrades." Vision will also be seen in multiple forms, with his final upgrade not complete until the third act.[60]
  • There are going to be a number of cool battles in the film, with one of them taking place in a forested area, which may or may not lead to a confrontation with Baron Von Strucker and their first encounter with "The Twins" aka Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch. This sequence is said to be near the opening of the film and will be where we see our first "hero shot" of the team together.
  • Avengers Tower will be the base for The Avengers in the film, as well as being a potential "Avengers Academy" as extras have been seen on set wearing "Avengers Recruits" shirts. The scene in question reportly involves "Avengers Recruits" in training while Tony Stark himself was seen making an entrance in an orange Audi with Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Nick Fury, James Rhodes (Iron Patriot armor only), Sam Wilson, Antione Triplett, Thor, Black Widow, and Captain America all in costume.
  • According to Kevin Feige, the new Avengers Tower is the largest ever for a Marvel film, featuring a large landing platform and garage for the new Quinjet within a large space that is full of windows, screens, and "techno stuff" but "really chic" with a lab directly in the middle where Stark and Banner work together.
  • The Quinjet redesign features more chairs to accommodate all Avengers, much like the X-Men's Blackbird. The overall design is less military and more sleek with a bigger array of weaponry.
  • Black Widow's costume update will feature not only the previously reported batons, but her suit is said to be more "TRON-style" in nature with blue lights and electricity around the suit. Her enemies will now receive electric shocks or a "widow's sting" when she hits them, giving her more of a "superhero" edge amongst her super-powered counterparts.
  • Ultron will be more than just a helmet, with his full face being articulated, including the mouth. All movements from James Spader's face are used to bring more personality to the villain. The suit mock-up is "reminiscent of the weapon that Agent Coulson used to shoot Loki in THE AVENGERS". The suit is said to have a "red firelight underneath, giving him a kind of a 'Balrog' -like effect from LOTR."
  • The Vision's look will have a helmet akin to the Iron Man armor, but it’s designed more like a face than a smooth Stark helmet. The iconic yellow and green are present in the design, but it’s more metallic shades than bright ‘comic book colors.’ They said it reminds them somewhat of the T-100 from Terminator 2 but it’s not as shiny. The yellow metal “liquid” bits seem to light up. This may or may not happen since there are two designs for that section. One lights up the other doesn’t. That’s the only difference. The cape is present, but they say it appears to only “pop out” when in flight mode. The cap sports some similar shades of yellow as the body. The “neck pieces” are the same yellow but they seem to shift positions from “standing” (for lack of a better word) to “flight mode”.[65]
  • The Vision will be 100% Paul Bettany with his face and body all in metallic form, very shiny with gold, red, and green (as well as the yellow cape).[66]
  • According to Geek Syndicate and Film3Sixty, the footage showed in the UK featured "a foretaste of the action-packed sequel, including a sneak-peak at Iron Man’s Hulkbuster battling The Hulk, and our first look at Avengers Tower, which houses the heroes, including labs for Stark and Dr. Banner. Director Joss Whedon described Avengers Tower as his – and the cast’s – favorite set yet. The short clip also showed off the globetrotting locations being used, including South Korea, Italy and our very own United Kingdom. About two minutes of footage were shown. The Avengers Tower's interior looks Amazing and is very S.H.I.E.L.D. like but with a Tony Stark spin. Shot of Captain America on a Motorbike. Quinjets on display at Avengers Tower. Saw Quicksilver in action running (but not a superspeed)and saw some animatronics of Hulk vs a Hulkbuster" while Radio Times and Flickering Myth chimed in with: "Also sighted were new brother sister duo Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Scarlet has mysterious reality warping powers (in the footage this mostly involved making some blocks float around) while Quicksilver can run really, really fast (although without the special effects, it was more of a light jog). Scarlet Witch was shown fighting alongside Hawkeye on a ruined Italian street, but earlier in the reel both she and her brother were locked in fancy Perspex prison cells. Designed by Stark out of the ruins of his New York penthouse, The Avengers Tower has floor to ceiling windows, twin laboratories for Stark and Bruce Banner, and parking for supersonic jets. It’s reminiscent of the SHIELD helicarrier in terms of construction, with lots of shiny metal pillars." and "Tony Stark holding Loki’s stick from The Avengers. A scene in Africa with Captain America and Black Widow on a motorway. Pre-visuals of Hulk vs. Hulk Buster Iron Man (Joss Whedon said this was the first thing he wanted to have in the movie). Joss talking about the Avengers Tower set being “the most beautiful he’s ever worked on."
  • Ultron (the pronoun he prefers) was built to be both sentient and all-consuming in his quest for knowledge. He’s even programmed to feel emotions — although he gravitated toward rage rather than compassion. He could evolve and rebuild himself into bigger and stronger forms, but empathy was a struggle. Once he went rogue, Ultron was also hard to kill. Destroy one form, and he merely uploaded his consciousness into another form.
  • In Age of Ultron, those origins details remain the same, but the person who created him has changed. In the comics, Ultron was built by scientist Hank Pym (a.k.a. the first Ant-Man). This time, he is the handiwork of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark —devised, essentially, as the ultimate drone, a way for Iron Man to abdicate his duties and offload them onto a fully mechanized protector.
  • The Avengers sequel begins with Stark’s latest plan to fix the world: Ultron will be an all-seeing, all-knowing captain of a planetary police force known as the Iron Legion, a team of robotic beat cops who resemble blue-and-white versions of the Iron Man suit but have no human core — and less soul than a Carpenters album. If it all works out, the superheroes can rest easy.
  • In a bid to give his creation a dose of humanity, Stark programs Ultron (performed and voiced by his Less Than Zero brat pack costar James Spader) with elements of his own personality — which proves to be Mistake No. 1.
  • The problem is that our new robot overlord is an absolutist, who inherits Stark’s cynicism, but not his sympathy. “It’s not the good version that could’ve come from [Stark's] intellect and personality,” says Chris Hemsworth.
  • In one of the opening scenes, the gang is celebrating with a swank party in the peak of Stark’s New York City skyscraper – formerly Stark Tower, it’s now the headquarters for the Avengers. Stark sees the soiree as a chance for the Avengers to schmooze with the city’s powerbrokers in a post-S.H.I.E.L.D. environment, showing that they are not merely superpowered vigilantes. Half-filled glasses of wine, bottles of beer, and partially eaten plates of sushi and cookies litter the tables in this three-story marble and steel structure, constructed entirely within the soundstage—complete with a loading dock for the Quinjet and an upstairs laboratory for Stark and Banner (Mark Ruffalo) to blind themselves with science.
  • Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has put aside the cape and chest plate for a t-shirt and slacks, while Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow has swapped her leathery catsuit for an empire-waist cocktail dress with a billowing skirt — which helps hide the actress’s real-life pregnancy.
  • Banner looks a little uptight in his purple button-down and tweedy jacket, while Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is in wallflower mode, lingering on the periphery by himself, ever the loner. Chris Evans’ Captain America is making small talk with former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). Most of the partygoers have left; now it’s just the old friends lingering.
  • AFTERPARTY AFTERMATH: That’s when all hell breaks loose. The Legionnaires have suddenly activated, and are inexplicably trying to kill the heroes. In the chaos, Ultron – in one of his first, metallic forms — announces his new plan to bring peace to the planet — by eradicating the most destructive thing that walks on it: humans.
  • In the midst of the assault scene, Downey finds himself suspended 50 feet above the set, riding piggyback on an actor in a motion-capture suit who will be digitally replaced with a hovering, hostile Legionnaire. With no armor at his disposal, Stark grabs the only weapon handy—a fondue fork—and jams it into the robot soldier’s neck as they bang around the ceiling. “The deadliest fondue fork in all the land!” Whedon jokes. “From Odin’s melted cheese, I shall destroy thee!” Even without their battle gear, the Avengers make short work of the traitorous, mechanical assailants. But Ultron is just getting started. He’s now thinking for himself … and they are not happy thoughts.
  • “I know you’re ‘good’ people,” he tells them. “I know you mean well… but you just didn’t think it through…. There is only one path to peace… your extermination.” In the next shot, focused on the heroes’ reactions, the patronizing snarl of Ultron is delivered off camera by Whedon. A few days before this scene was shot, however, Spader himself stood before the cast, hissing out the words like a bored prosecutor making the case against humanity.
  • “A lot of times when Ultron starts talking, it’s beautiful. It’s really intelligent stuff,” says Evans. “He’s out to do the things he wants to do because he’s disgusted with X, Y, and Z. You could probably sit down with Ultron and have a really intelligent conversation. He could blow your mind with his views.”And then blow it for real?" Evans laughs. “Yeah, and then kill you.”
  • Ultron recruits the Twins to help him. Hawkeye reaches out to them and talks about his past as a carnie. Ultron mocks him for being an insect among gods and not relevant to any of their fights.
  • Stark and Banner have a falling-out because Stark created counter-measures against the Hulk without telling him, and used his neural patterns on Ultron even after Banner told him not to. Banner ends up getting infected with a biological agent created by Ultron that prevents him from Hulking out, and has to find a cure, sacrificing the one thing he always wanted to help his friends.
  • Captain America and Thor visit Dr. Erik Selvig to find out more about Vibranium.
  • Andy Serkis is Phineas Horton.
  • The Vision is J.A.R.V.I.S. reprogrammed by Ultron to act as a weapon against the Avengers. He is modeled after Stark's childhood butler Edwin Jarvis, and Tony manages to reach him.
  • Ultron disables all Starktech, including the War Machine armor, taking Rhodes out of commission. He still helps the Avengers as a soldier, and there's also an appearance of USAF Captain Carol Danvers, she leads a squad of F-16s in an assault against Ultron, but her face is never seen.
  • Ultron is catty and calls Stark "father".
  • Nick Fury confers with the Avengers in the beginning and later coordinates them during the final battle with Ultron and the Iron Legion.
  • Hawkeye fires an arrow at Ultron from an exploding Quinjet filled with drones, sacrificing himself to hit him with an USB arrow that uploads a virus created by Stark into Ultron's system. Captain America wields Thor's hammer and destroys Ultron's enhanced body. Ultron tries to jump to other robotic bodies, but Quicksilver destroys them one by one in a matter of seconds, and Ultron ends up trapped in an old Iron Man armor, which is promptly destroyed.
  • Captain America's broken shield is a dream when Scarlet Witch is checking out the most likely outcome of the final battle.
  • The Vision and Scarlet Witch have some moments. Quicksilver is a hothead and fiercely protective of her. There's some weird undertones, and Stark makes a "Game of Thrones" joke about it.
  • Captain America is still searching for Bucky.
  • In the end, the Avengers create a Avengers Academy to train human soldiers to protect the planet as their support. Falcon and War Machine show up to audition.
  • Captain America is visited by Phil Coulson, who tells him SHIELD is back, off-grid and off-books. Coulson still respects Cap and gives him a new lead on Bucky's whereabouts, showing grainiy security footage of Bucky at a train station in Portland.
  • There's a flashback to 1945 where Steve, Peggy Carter, Howard Stark and Jarvis, played by Paul Bettany, meet Phineas Horton, who talks with them about robotics and the potential of neural pattern mapping to program automatons, planting the seed to Ultron.
  • Stark blames himself for Ultron's crimes, and Rogers gives him a pep talk, even echoing the "genius, billionaire, playboy, philantrophist" line.[67]
  • DEBUNKED: Vision will not make his appearance until the third act of the movie, suggesting that he may be something of a secret weapon for the Avengers when all their usual methods of attack fail against Ultron.
  • At the end of the film, the team will change drastically; it will be co-led by Captain America and Black Widow, and consist of Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Vision, and War Machine. Quicksilver will not be a member of the team because he will have died while protecting another Avenger.
  • Quicksilver will die in the film.[68]
  • Captain America and Nick Fury team up to put together a new team of Avengers at the conclusion of the sequel because Iron Man is done, Hulk is missing and Thor has returned to Asgard to deal with the events leading up to Thor: Ragnarok.[69]
  • The team will consist of leaders Captain America and Black Widow along with The Falcon, Scarlet Witch, The Vision, and War Machine.[70]
  • The movie dives right into the Strucker fight, with all the 6 main Avengers present.
  • Hawkeye gets shot badly when Quicksilver distracts him.
  • The Avengers call Dr. Cho in to the tower to patch Hawkeye up.
  • Tony retrieves Loki's scepter from Strucker.
  • Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch escape from Strucker's cell in the course of the battle.
  • Scarlet Witch touches many of the Avengers, "infecting" them with her mind.
  • The Avengers defeat HYDRA.
  • Back in the tower, Dr. Cho heals Hawkeye.
  • With the help of the information gathered in this battle, Tony and Bruce finish the Ultron program. They don't tell the others since Tony is unsure what they'll have to say about it.
  • Natasha and Bruce are seen flirting heavily.
  • Tony and Pepper are still a couple, as are Thor and Jane.
  • Ultron emerges for the first time as a program and kills JARVIS.
  • Ultron then crashes the party scene in the first robot form and is defeated.
  • The Avengers have a heavy discussion when Tony admit what he's done. Thor is choking him in the course of the debate. They get over it to fight the new threat together, though.
  • Ultron back at the Strucker castle recruits Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, promising them to help protect their country from the USA.
  • Ultron and the twins go to Aftrica to retrieve Vibranium from Klaue (no mention of Wakanda).
  • The Avengers fly to Africa and fight the twins and Ultron.
  • Scarlet Witch puts some of the Avengers into trance, including Natasha and Steve who wander around uselessly, and unleashes the Hulk.
  • Hawkeye takes Scarlet Witch out with an electric arrow and remains the only one not effected by her mind control.
  • Quicksilver carries Scarlet Witch away from the battle.
  • The Avengers defeat Ultron and the twins again and fly back to New York.[71]
  • Baron von Strucker is captured and thrown into jail.
  • The Hulk is defeated when he wears off of Scarlet Witchs' trance and Hulkbuster makes a final knock-out blow.
  • Ultron uses the vibranium to make Sokovia float in the air, the Avengers evacuate the citizens so Thor can destroy and stop Ultron from crashing it down - as this is going to eliminate everyone in total chaos.
  • Ultron wants to use Visions body as another form of evolution.
  • The Vision is captured by the Avengers thus being stolen from Ultron, JARVIS is uploaded into the Vision.
  • Ultron uses a jet to shoot bullets at Hawkeye who is protecting a little kid, Quicksilver runs in but is killed, thus leading to his demise. It should be noted that he has some kind of regeneration according to Maria Hill in the beginning of the movie, possibly meaning he isn't necessarily dead.
  • The twins attempt to destroy the Vision before Thor stops them, saying that he can save the world from Ultron according to one of his visions.
  • Ultron accidently cuts off Klaues arm.
  • Vision is somehow worthy and wields Thor's hammer, shocking the other Avengers.
  • Ultrons "heart" is ripped out thanks to Scarlet Witch and the other Avengers in the final battle, though the mechanical menace goes into another body in order to survive.
  • Vision gains the Mind Gem from Loki's Staff, he uses this to kill Ultron for good. Thus saving the world.
  • The Avengers' visions consist of
    • Stark: The Avengers lying in pain in a battle with Ultron, with Cap's Shield broken in half
    • Cap: A scene where a dance is happening, Peggy appears in this scene.
    • Thor: A scene where Asgard is in destruction, possibly foreshadowing Ragnarok.
    • Hulk: He gets angry for some reason
    • Natasha: A scene that reminds her of her childhood, where she watches ballerinas dancing.
    • Hawkeye: As stated before, he is the only one unaffected by the trance as his arrow hits and injuries Wanda.
  • War Machine returns to help assist in the final battle.
  • Bruce and Natasha kiss.
  • Bruce Banner takes the quinjet and flies off somewhere, apparently into the ocean. Banner tried to take Natasha with him but she stayed in order to fight amongst her friends.
  • The mid-credits scene is Thanos, it is revealed he has the Infinity Gauntlet with no gems however (but it is unknown how he obtained the Gauntlet). He also comments how he has to do the hunting himself now, possibly referring to Loki's failure to get the Tesseract (Loki never appears in the movie, but is mentioned).
  • In the final scene, Cap and Tony talk about an "Avengers Academy"
  • Falcon returns after his mysterious absence after the house party.
  • The New Avengers team is Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, War Machine, Scarlet Witch (who has a new costume), and the Vision.
  • Before Ultron's demise, he talks to the Vision about his goals before he is ultimately eliminated.
